A workaround allowing actors to use a free teleprompter app and look directly into the lens.
Setup allowing actors to use free teleprompter app

Learn 2 secrets for looking into the lens with a free teleprompter app. I had to shoot a 2-minute video
at home and needed to use a teleprompter. All of the free teleprompter apps I used had me reading
the script slightly camera left. I was never looking directly into the lens of the camera.

Why I Only Wanted to Use A Free Teleprompter App

I rarely use a teleprompter at home, only on sets. So, I didn’t want to invest in buying
a teleprompter or paying for a teleprompter app. Hours were spent trying to get my eyes
looking directly into the lens.

Discovering 2 Secrets For Looking Into The Lens With Free Teleprompter App

Don’t know if this ever happens to you, but it is not uncommon for ideas to appear in my brain very early in the morning. Around 4:00 AM an idea came to me. Maybe I could build a little platform and place my cell phone very close to the lens of the lap top camera. Then, if I moved further back, from the laptop, it will actually look like I am staring directly into the camera lens. Taking off the rubber protection case of my cell phone also allowed me to move the camera close to the lens.

You Can See The Cell Phone In The Shot

It became clear to me that it was OK to move the cell phone so close to the camera that it
could be seen in the video. That was fine. Because, I also knew that when I edited the video,
the side of the visible cell phone could easily be cropped out. It worked.

Are You Needing to Use A Teleprompter For A Home Shoot?

If you are needing to use a teleprompter while shooting a video/audition at home,
just follow my steps in the video and it will work perfectly for you.

Have You Used A Free Teleprompter App

Have you ever used a free teleprompter app that allowed you to look straight
into the lens of the camera? If so, share your information with others on the comment section of the channel so we can all learn from each other.

Learn 6 more acting reel mistakes actors make that prevent them from creating a great reel.

Below Are 6 More Acting Reel Mistakes Actors Make

After recording last week’s quick tip video, I thought of 6 more acting reel mistakes actors make. Below is the original video – 1 biggest acting reel mistake actors make.

The 1 Biggest Acting Reel Mistake Actors Make – How To Make A Great Reel
https://youtu.be/JKOfeq4tEaA?feature=shared I thought of 6 more acting reel mistakes actors make and wanted to share them with you.

Here are the 6 additional acting reel mistakes

1. Don’t add special music or a soundtrack to your acting reel. If there is music in your clips, that is fine. But, don’t act like a composer and add additional music.

2. Don’t turn your reel into a slick and fancy edited reel. Having interesting fades and cuts from one scene to the next will stop agents and casting directors from viewing you as an actor. Instead you will be looked at as an editor.

3. Always have the name of the project at the beginning (I prefer the lower left side of the clip) so people know what they are watching. My title will last around 3 seconds.

4 & 5. Don’t slate your name, height, or other information as part of your reel. But, it will be helpful to have your name contact information (yours or your agent’s) as a slide at the end. This will allow people to know whom and how to contact you.

6. Always label your acting reel professionally. Use your name and state – film and TV reel or whatever types of clips are on your acting reel.

The 1 Biggest Acting Reel Mistake Actors Make – How To Make A Great Reel

The 1 biggest acting reel mistake actors make is not knowing how long the reel should be.
Some actors like to “show off” and cram a ton of clips into their reel. They think that showing how much work they have done will impress agents and casting directors. The problem with that is
that people won’t watch most of the clips.

The 1 Biggest Acting Reel Mistake Is The Length of the Reel

Industry professionals won’t watch much longer than 1 minute, maybe up to 90 seconds
of an actor’s reel. They just don’t have the time. So, actors should carefully think
about what represents them the best and only show those clips. Less is more!

How to Get Material For Your Actor’s Reel

If you don’t have any clips, or you need more, here are 4 suggestions on
ways to get additional footage.

1. Contact a local college’s film professor and audition for a student film
2. Find filmmaking Facebook Group pages
3. Check out wifv.org (Women In Film And Television) and find others who are interested in filmmaking
4. Find others in your area and create your own film

I don’t believe that successful actors are simply lucky

Some people think that successful actors are simply lucky. I don’t believe this at all. I know that successful actors put themselves in situations where good things can occur. And, when they do, they are ready and prepared to take advantage of a great situation.

Why I Don’t Think That Actors Having Success Happens Because Of Luck

In this video, I share a story about how I put myself in a good situation. And, while in this situation something really crazy to happened. Some people were shocked when I turned down an amazing job. Here’s why I chose to decline the booking.

When You Should Turn Down a Project – Even an Amazing Job

There are a few reasons why actors and models should always turn down a job. One of the reasons is (if this is a TV spot or commercial modeling project) if you don’t want to be associated with the product, company or organization. Perhaps you are a vegan and don’t want to support companies that promote eating meat. Then you might not want to be in an add for fast food restaurants. Or, maybe you aren’t comfortable with some of the language you have to say in the scene. It’s possible that you are being asked to do something in a scene that you just don’t want to do.

Accepting Or Turning Down A Great Job Is Your Call

You never want to do something that you will regret. I know how hard it is to say no to an agent. With my nearly 1,300 bookings, I have only turned down around 6:00. Agents might not like you turning down a job, but a good agent will understand and be supportive, even if they aren’t happy with your decision. The part might go to an actor from another agency, so your agent won’t get any percentages from the booking or residuals.

Don't be scared to say no to an audition or booking
Don’t Be Afraid to Say No To Agent

Sometimes Saying No Is A Smart Decision

As important as our work is, and how difficult it can be to get a booking, sometimes turning the project down is the best thing to do.

In this video, I will not only share with you the reason I turned down a great booking but also when actors should always turn down a job and the best way to do it.

It Is Hard Being A Successful Actor

Aaron Marcus Being Saved By Tom Hanks In A Man Called Otto

The actor’s strike absolutely forced me to focus on 4 helpful projects. Things can get really busy between auditioning, working, and doing other acting business-related things that sometimes really important projects get pushed aside.

The Actor’s Strike Forced Me to Focus On 4 Projects

1. Working On a New Headshot

With the Actor’s Strike happening, I decided to begin the process of getting a new headshot. I am hoping that within one month the headshot will be completed. It is essential that all actors have up-to-date and effective headshots. Without one, it makes it so hard to be requested to audition. Casting directors make quick decisions on who gets to read for a role by quickly looking at hundreds of submitted headshots. Yours must be a great representation of you, look interesting and clearly show others what types you should be reading for.

2. Work On Your Acting Reel

When actors are just getting started, they won’t have an acting reel. If you don’t have one, now could be the perfect time to get together with fellow actors and see if you can create a group of people to write, act, shoot, do sound and edit a short film. This can be a great way to get more experience in front of the camera, build up your resume and add a clip to a reel.

Another way to get in a film is to contact local colleges and see if any of the film classes have students shooting films for the class. If so, see if you can audition.

3. Create A List of Contacts In A Spread Sheet

I have a list of over 1,200 contacts in an Excel spread sheet. They are the casting directors, agents, producers, art/creative directors, agents, photographers and others whom I have met
in the industry. I have their names, phone numbers, email and website address. This will be
very helpful when you begin marketing and staying in touch with them.

4. Begin Marketing To Those On Your Special List

Once you have a list together (maybe share contacts with fellow actors) then you can begin
sending them emails in order to stay in touch. For some of the contacts, I sent a clip from
the scene I had with Tom Hanks in A Man Called Otto. Even if you have worked with someone
recently, it is easy for people to forget about us. So, send them a short note and remind them
what you have been doing and hopefully, they will bring you in for auditions or direct bookings.

This 1 Thing Has Helped Me Stay Sane In This Crazy Acting World

This 1 thing that has helped me stay sane in this crazy acting world took quite a few years to figure out. It was all about how to best handle rejection. Not getting the booking, or the contract from an agent. That really took its toll on me.

It Can Be Hard Staying Sane As An Actor

What many people don’t understand is that actors are salespeople. We are selling ourselves. We are the product. And when actors don’t book the job, it is easy to take it personally and think that people don’t want us.

This 1 Thing Made Me A Better Actor and Person

I finally realized that not booking the audition was not a statement about me as a person. I might have given a wonderful audition and still not book the job. There are so many reasons why actors are cast and not cast, and quite often it is not about giving the best audition.

This 1 Realization Helped Keep Me Sane

I learned that audition is not like the Olympics. It is not about who gives the “best” audition. Of course, your audition has to be great, but many actors are giving great auditions. It comes down to who fits the role the best.

Don’t Take Things Personally In The Acting Industry

I finally learned that deciding who gets the role is nothing personal. These are strictly business decisions. You read might have been wonderful, but you were a little too tall, short, too beautiful, not pretty enough, etc… Who knows. The point is, don’t ever take things personally. This has allowed me to feel much more sane in this crazy acting world.

Are There Any Discoveries That Has Helped You As An Actor

There is 1 absolutely crazy demand that SAG-AFTRA is fighting during the strike negotiations. You won’t believe this.

1 Of The Absolutely Crazy Demands

1 of the absolutely crazy demands that SAG-AFTRA is fighting has to do with producers wanting to be able to scan and use an extras face in perpetuity. SAG-AFTRA is fighting against film and TV producers to be able to scan an extra’s face, pay them a day’s pay (which is less than $200) and be able to use their image forever.

My Last Union Strike

My last Union strike was back in 2000. We were on strike for TV commercials. That strike lasted
6 months. Really hoping the current strike will get resolved in a much shorter time.

Want to resurrect your acting career? Is your acting slow or work dead? Here are 5 amazing strategies to breathe life back into your career.

Is your acting work dead right now?

First Thing Actors Should Do to Get More Work Happening

Effective Materials

1. Is your acting work dead? If so, here are 5 amazing strategies that can resurrect your career. It is imperative that actors have up-to-date and great marketing materials. Especially, in today’s time actors need an effective headshot and resume that casting directors expect. This can make the difference between getting and not getting the audition.

It is not uncommon for hundreds of headshots/resumes to be submitted to casting directors for each role. If your materials aren’t selling you well and stand out in a positive way, then it will be very hard to be invited to read for the role. It won’t matter how incredibly talented you are, having bad marketing materials will prevent casting directors from seeing your amazing talents.

Second Thing Actors Should Do to Get More Work Happening

Agents

2. Having an agent to represent you is always the best way for actors to get auditions and book jobs. If you have had a number of talks with your agent and still not happy with the relationship, then maybe it is time to find another agent.

Or, this could be the time for you to expand your acting skills and find an agent in another market. The bigger the market the more chances you could have to get auditions and book jobs.

Third Thing Actors Should Do to Get More Work Happening

Staying Sharp

3. Like an athlete who stops playing and practicing, it is easy for actors to lose their audition and memorization skills. When work is slow that is the time to keep practicing so your audition and memorization skills remain sharp. If you aren’t fully proficient with shooting and editing home auditions, this is the time to practice and be ready when auditions begin again.

Fourth Thing Actors Should Do to Get More Work Happening

Create Contact Files

4. Creating an Excel Spreadsheet has been incredibly helpful to me throughout my career. Every time I meet someone or hear about an industry professional, I could potentially work with, I add that person into my spreadsheet. I currently have names and contact information for 1,000 + agents, photographers, directors, casting directors, art and creative directors from advertising agencies and others connected to the acting industry. This allows me to stay in touch to remind them I am still around and what I have been recently doing.

Fifth Thing Actors Should Do to Get More Work Happening

Market Yourself

5. Even if you have an agent, it is so important for actors to market themselves to keep them fresh in decision makers minds. It is not a coincidence that I normally will get the opportunity to audition for a project shortly I have sent out emails to those on my contact list.

Even if you don’t have earth shattering news about an amazing project you recently worked on, just letting people know that you are still around is a great reminder. This will force them to think of you. That makes it easier for them to contact you about a new project.

Run Your Acting Business Wisely

I always find it really helpful to do everything I can to make things happen in my career. I don’t like to sit by my phone and hope people will reach out to me. Be pro-active and do everything you can to help get more things happening in your career.

Sometimes Actors Need to Leave An Agent

If you want to change agents, make sure you answer these 4 questions before deciding.

Leaving your acting agent is a big decision. Sometimes actors need and should switch agents.
But, you don’t want to make this serious decision based on the wrong reasons. It is crucial that actors
seriously think about the possible ramifications that could happen when leaving your agent.

There are times, like in any relationship, it is time to break up and go separate ways.

Below you will read about a number of situations where it is a good idea to make a representation change. Don’t quickly make the agency switch until after having multiple conversations with your agent to try and resolve any issues you are feeling.

Here are a few of the topics discussed in the video.

Not getting enough auditions

Not receiving the attention you expect from your agent

If you see that there are different strategies about your career goals

If you are being courted by a bigger – more prestigious agency (but be careful in this situation)

Make sure there are no legal issues with terminating your contract  If you believe your agent is not doing his or her job or not showing much interest in you

In the video you will learn the best ways to communicate these issues with your agent. And, understand when it is really time to make an agent change. And, how to end things with your agent properly.

10 Audition Mistakes That Casting Directors Hate
Casting Directors hate things 10 audition mistakes made by actors

Learn and Avoid the 10 Audition Mistakes Actors Make That Casting Directors Hate

Below you will find the 10 audition mistakes actors make that casting directors hate. You will see that some of the mistakes are very easily fixed. And, some of the other audition mistakes might not be easily known by actors who are just getting started in the industry.

Respond On Time

1. Make sure you respond to your agent or casting director even if you are not going to shoot the audition. And, make sure the audition gets uploaded on time.

Make Sure You Are Right For the Role

2. Don’t submit for roles that aren’t right for you. If the description is clearly not your type, pass on the audition.

Always Have a Reader

3. Always have a reader and make sure they can be heard, don’t overpower your voice, and if they are not an actor, ask them to read the lines “dead.”

Sound and Lighting Must Be Good

4. Make sure your lighting and sound are clear and sharp. Don’t have shadows or things in the background that are distracting the casting director from looking at you. The sound needs to be very clear so you are easily understood (as well as the reader.)

Shoot Your Audition In A Horizontal Format

5. Always shoot your film and TV audition horizontally.  This is how directors view films and watch TV, so allow them to see you audition in that format.

Edit Your Audition Properly

6. Always edit the beginning and end of the audition so people only see the audition. Don’t allow them to view you getting prepared or stopping the recording of the audition.

Follow The CD’s Instructions

7. Follow the casting directors instructions and slate exactly how you were instructed. One tip that you will see in the video is: instead of saying I am reading for the role of ???, instead say you are that character. For example, “My name is Aaron Marcus and reading for the role of Dr. Barnes.”  Instead, try, “My name is Aaron Marcus, and I am Dr. Barnes.”

Beware Of Social Mistakes

8. If you are in a casting directors office, don’t offer to shake their hand. Not everyone likes that and as you will see in the video, I learned that the hard way.

Your Wardrobe is Important

9. Don’t wear costumes for the character you are reading for. If your character is a police officer, don’t wear a uniform. Instead, imply the look by wearing a blue shirt. This can be insulting to the casting director.

Don’t Mime During An Audition

10. Don’t mime during your audition. People will stop watching your performance and begin looking at your mime technique. You can indicate things with your body language.

Have you ever had Imposter Syndrome While Acting? Many actors have. Even famous actors. Here are a just a few of the many well known actors who have talked about having Imposter Syndrome while acting.

Actors Who Have Discussed Having Imposter Syndrome While Acting

Look at this list of actors who have discussed having Imposter Syndrome. I read an interview with Tom Hanks who mentioned he was having a tough scene being shot the next day. He started feeling nervous about being “found out,” and that people would finally discover that he can’t act. And, that he past success were simply mistakes.

Jodie Foster
Emma Watson
Penelope Cruz
Tom Hanks
Tina Few
Kate Winslet
Meryl Streep
Natalie Portman
Viola Davis

Does Having Imposter Syndrome Go Away?

The actors who mentioned feeling Imposter Syndrome said that after they began shooting they calmed down.

Why Do Actors Have Imposter Syndrome While Acting?

We are in an unusual type of business. Every scene we shoot is unpredictable. There is no formula that allows us to do the take exactly the same way. There is no guarantee that we will be able to capture the specific emotion every time we read our lines. It is easy to feel uneasy and unsure of our skills. That is true even for Academy Award winning actors. That is why it is easy to have Imposter Syndrome. It’s easy to think that we won’t be able to execute what is needed and people will see that we can’t act.

1 Powerful Solution When Experiencing Imposter Syndrome

I know this might sound a little weird, but I found it helpful when experiencing Imposter Syndrome.
My thoughts turn to agreeing that I am an imposter. That I can’t act. And, I have no idea why people have been hiring me for the past 38 years. So, I decide to continue being an imposter and keep fooling people.
That has helped me.

I will share a few of my 5 personal stories from Tom Hanks’ film A Man Called Otto. You can learn about the others by watching the video

Tom Hanks (Otto)Saving Aaron Marcus in A Man Called Otto

My first personal story is about the unusual audition I had for the Tom Hanks’ film, A Man Called Otto. Normally, agents will submit an actor for a specific role. The casting director asked me to read for six different roles. All of the characters were standing on the train platform and had things to say after the business man falls onto the train tracks. I guess they thought I was the perfect person for that role.

2 of the 5 Personal Stories From The Tom Hanks Film A Man Called Otto

The second personal story from Tom Hanks’ film A Man Called Otto is about meeting with the director. In the script, there was no mention of what caused
me to fall onto the train tracks. I made the decision that it was from having a heart attack. When I arrived
onto the set, I was able to meet with the director to discuss the reason for my fall. He agreed with me, that a heart attack was the cause. Fortunately, I had done my research and learned what it looks like
when someone is having a heart attack.

3 of the 5 Personal Story From The Tom Hanks Film A Man Called Otto

The third personal story I want to share here is about my stunt. I was told that there would be a stunt double for me. It was around an 8 foot drop from the platform to the train tracks. I watched my stunt double do the fall twice. He was great. Later in the day, I was asked if I was comfortable doing the fall. I said yes. With training from the stunt coordinator and a few of the stunt artists, I felt comfortable enough to do the fall from the train platform. I discuss the experience in greater detail in the video.

Great to Share My Personal Stories From Working With Tom Hanks

It was so wonderful getting a chance to work and spend a few days with such a talented and more importantly an incredibly kind man. And, so happy to be able to share my personal stories with you.

I felt crazy repeating lines right before a scene was shot
I felt crazy repeating my lines before a scene was shot

I felt absolutely crazy repeating lines before shooting every scene. Fortunately, I figured out this technique doesn’t work for me and stopped preparing this way.

Repeating Lines Made Me Feel Absolutely Crazy

Before my scene was shot, I used the same technique that I did before taking a final. I would sit in class and quickly read over my notes as quickly as I could. Of course, I was not thinking at that point. It was almost like doing something that I thought would comfort me. It didn’t work too well in school either.

Why Repeating Lines Before Shooting a Scene Made Me Feel Crazy

Repeating the lines so many times separated me from the material. I need to make one thing clear. I find that repeating lines over and over again can be a really good way to memorize lines. What I am talking about here is mindlessly repeating lines right be shooting the scene. This repetition made me feel more distant from the material.

My brain felt numb and wasn’t connecting to any of the material. I was taken away from the emotional aspects of the scene. This technique made me became very robotic which made it difficult for me to perform the scene in the way I should.

This Technique Helps Me Before Shooting a Scene

Music has a major impact on my emotions. Finding a song that either relaxes me
and or places me in the right emotional place for my character is incredibly helpful.

After going over my lines and feeling confident that I know the words, then, I listen to the
music. This is the best way for me to prepare for shooting a scene.

Auditions can be scary. Watch, and learn 7 unbelievably easy ways to prepare before your next audition for powerful results.

Prepare For Your Next Audition By Using 7 Unbelievably Easy Ways For Powerful Results

Auditions can be scary if you don’t know how to prepare

When I first began acting, I had no idea how to prepare before an audition. I did not even know there were specific techniques or ways to get ready for the read. I quickly learned that doing auditions by “just winging it” was not a smart way or helpful way to get cast.

Unbelievably Easy Ways to Prepare Before Your Next Audition For Powerful Results

  1. If you are auditioning for a TV show, make sure you watch the program and are very familiar with the show. Is it a comedy or serious show. What is the pacing of the show. Do actors cut each other off, or are the lines said in a more laid back way.
  2. If auditioning for a film, research the director. Become more familiar with the director’s style.
  3. Read the sides many times. Make sure you understand all of the words and can pronounce them.
  4. Don’t ever try and figure out what the casting director wants to see in the audition. There is no way of knowing. And, this is your opportunity to play and be creative with how you develop your character.
  5. What is your character wanting to achieve in the scene.
  6. What is preventing your character from getting what is needed.
  7. Most importantly, have fun. This is your chance to act, even if it is only for a few minutes. Enjoy yourself.

Aaron working as an on

Make Your On Camera Narration Performances Powerful

One of the ways you can make your on camera narration performances powerful is to know how to properly use a teleprompter. Before I share this with you, first, I want to make sure you know what an on camera narrator does on projects.

The on camera narrator is the person who is reading directly into the camera and most likely is reading off a teleprompter. The person is typically sharing a lot of information for the audience. Unlike most acting performances, the on camera narrator typically won’t look at the other actor.

How An On Camera Narrator Must Use a Teleprompter

If the on camera narrator is using a teleprompter, it is very important to only look at the teleprompter. One of the 7 strategies you will learn in this video is that once you begin reading off of the prompter, the on camera narrator must continue to look at the teleprompter. There is an urge to look at the other person (if there is someone else in the project,) but you can’t look back and forth from the prompter to the person. It will look very strange.

Practice Using A Teleprompter Like An On Camera Narrator

You can practice using a teleprompter as if you are working as an on camera narrator by using the free website http://cueprompter.com/ This will give you the opportunity to try looking straight into the camera and play it back or look back and forth as if you are also talking with another actor to see how it looks.

On Camera Narration Work Can Be Great

Working as an on camera narrator can pay a lot. Union rates for a full-day (at least 8 hours) on camera narrator job pays over $1,100. And, you might get a chance to learn some very interesting things from the script.

Practice Being an On Camera Narrator

Spend time practicing with a teleprompter app so you are proficient at reading a prompter. That way if an opportunity for you to work as an on camera narrator happens, you will be ready.

Have You Ever Worked As An On Camera Narrator

If you have ever done on camera narration work, share any tips that you have that will help others. Leave a comment on the YouTube Channel page.
