Are Acting Networking Events Horrible For You?

Are acting networking events horrible for you? They can feel so
uncomfortable and stressful for actors.

Strategies for Acting Networking Events

One of the biggest mistakes actors make when attending
an acting networking event is to sell themselves. This is
an opportunity for an actor to meet, introduce themselves
or reconnect with an industry professional. Instead of talking
about yourself, ask questions about the other person.

Do This After Meeting Someone

Before you leave an acting networking event, give your
business card to the person you net and get their contact
information. This will easily allow you to follow up and
stay in touch.

Beware of this horribly disgusting acting scam.

There are some horrible companies that scam actors.
It is easy to prey on new actors or ones who want
to get started. And, these disgusting scammers have
even fooled more experienced actors. They think that
things don’t sound quite right, but it might be their one
chance to have some real success.

1 Way These Horribly Disgusting Acting Scams Work

I read an ad in the paper about how a N.Y. acting agency was
scouting my hometown looking for fresh faces to promote in N.Y.
The short version is that they wanted me to sign a contract
where I had to pay them a few thousand dollars in order
to have my headshot taken, some commercial photos, and
then they would begin marketing me in N.Y.

These Acting Scammers Will Pressure You

I was already very experienced but wanted to see how
they operated. When I mentioned that I wanted to take
the contract home with me so I could carefully read it,
the scammer told me that if I wasn’t willing to sign
the contract at that moment, they would tear up
the contract. They only wanted to work with “serious”
actors.

The Scamming Company Actually Said This

I was told very clearly that if I didn’t sign at that moment
I would never get work as an actor!

scam that has ripped off many people.

The NBC Show: Do No Harm

This Amazing Job Just Crushed Me

I was so excited to get cast on an NBC TV show. And,
even better was that the role looked like it would be recurring.

The NBC show was called Do No Harm. I was the president
of the hospital and the stars of the show worked there. I had
my first scene with the great Phylicia Rashad,
Steven Pasquale and Jurnee Smollett.

Some of the other amazing actors on the show were:
Lin Manuel Miranda and James Cromwell to name a few.

My first day of shooting was for a scene in episode 4.
I watched the first two episodes and found out the show
had been cancelled. After 2 episodes. They did show the other
episodes during the summer to replace another cancelled show.

What I Learned From This Horrible Experience

When you watch the video you will see that of course, I was
hit hard by the cancellation. But, then I stepped back and
thought that it was incredible that I landed the role. That is
what I started focusing on. That was very helpful to me.

Do Actors Need a Manager?

Do Actors Need a Manager?

Where the actor is living can be a major factor if he or she
needs a manager. If you are living in a small market, outside
of L.A., N.Y., Chicago or Atlanta, then you might not need
a manager.

Where you are at in your career is also a factor. If you are just
beginning and plan to move to a large market, having a manager
can be extremely helpful. The manager will help connect you
with the right acting classes, headshot photographers, carefully
go over your resume and help get you signed with an agent.

I never should have booked the HBO miniseries We Own This City

I Never Should Have Booked This HBO Show

I auditioned for the HBO miniseries “We Own This City.”
I even had a call back. But at that time, there were no
scheduled shoot dates.

Once I found out that I was booked, then I was told when my
scene would shoot. I was very disappointed because the shoot
date was when my family was going to be on vacation. I turned
it down.

It Was Hard Turning Down This HBO Show

In the past, I used to do everything possible to accept
bookings. Even in this situation, I thought about flying
back to Baltimore during vacation where the scene was
being shot. But, I decided, that at this point in my career,
I am placing priorities on my family.

During vacation, I received a call from casting to say that production
had to shut down due to someone on the set was sick. Production pushed
the shoot date and I was now available. So fortunate to have been able to do this job.
Crazy how sometimes things just work out.

Do you want to lower your stress while acting?

Want to Lower Your Stress While Acting

Acting can be a very stressful job. Actors can easily place
a lot of pressure and stress on themselves.

Acting is Different Than Other Jobs

When we audition, we are selling ourselves. But, like over sales
people when they hear no, it is about others not wanting the product
they are selling. When we don’t book a job, we are being told
that others don’t want US. That is very different.

When you watch the video, you will see how to deal
with this which can take a lot of stress while acting.

important self-tape audition rules

SAG-AFTRA negotiated important self-tape rules. You could be affected by these new rules even if non-union.

Important New Self Tape Rules SAG-AFTRA Negotiated

One of the new self-tape rules SAG-AFTRA negotiated is not forcing actors to have their sides (the portion of the script they are auditioning with) memorized for the initial audition. You will give a better audition with lines memorized. Sometimes, that just isn’t possible. Now, (assuming Union actors approve the new contract,) actors can always hold their sides for the audition.

Another New Self-Tape Rule

Now, actors have a minimum of 48 hours to shoot and upload the audition.

Nervous on Sets? This Simple Technique Helps Me Feel Calmer

Have you ever been nervous on sets? Many actors, even famous actors feel nervous on sets before shooting begins. The technique you will learn in the videos helps me feel calmer and more relaxed before shooting the scene.

Everyone reacts differently when arriving on a film or TV set.

Feeling Nervous on Sets?

Some actors fear forgetting lines, feel performance anxiety, have self-doubt, feel anxiety, get performance jitters causing dry mouth, cold sweats, insecurity a racing heart and even panic attacks.

These are not crazy reactions, but common feelings for lots of actors. If you ever experienced some or many of these emotions, don’t worry, it is common.

This can be especially true for those who haven’t had much experience as principal actors in a film or TV project. We can feel so much pressure.

The purpose of saying this is not wanting to scare anyone. Instead, I want to share the reality for many actors. And, more importantly my goal is to help my fellow actors understand and best deal with these real emotions.

This video will teach you one incredibly helpful and easy tip that has been very helpful to me. When possible, I use this tip while working on my lines prior to and after arriving on the set. It really calms me down a lot and allows me to focus much more on my work.

I made 1 horrible mistake that almost ruined a great headshot session a few weeks ago.

Aaron’s New Headshot

I was ready to create a new headshot. The photographer, David Blecman recommended
a makeup artist for me to work with during the shoot. She was really good. After putting
on my makeup she told me to have a great session.

I Wanted to Shoot Both Inside and Outside

For my new headshot, I wanted options and asked if we could shoot
both inside and outdoors. That was our plan. Shooting outside is trickier
than working in a more controlled studio environment. Depending on the sun
situation our eyes can squint a little and our hair can blow out of place. But,
I like the feel of outside photos.

I Never Experienced This Before

Every time I worked with a makeup artist for a headshot session, he/she would stay
for the entire shoot. That is why I never even thought to ask how long she would
stay.

We Shot Indoors First

I am so happy that the photographer suggested we shoot inside first. As it turned out,
after looking at all of the photos from the session, I actually liked the indoor shots the best.
That was very fortunate because none of the outdoor photos were usable. My hair was blown
around so much, I looked a mess. The photographer could have used his editing program,
but it would have taken forever to fix all of the windblown hairs. Had the makeup artist been
with me, she could have fixed the problem during the session.

My Suggestion When Working With a Makeup Artist

When you hire a makeup artist for your headshot session (which I think is a must) make sure
that he/she will stay for the entire session. Or, at least, stay for the beginning of the shoot if
working in a studio. That will guarantee that your hair and wardrobe are looking great during
your session.

A Successful Director Lied to A Famous Actor

While Working on a set, I heard and watched how a successful director lied and said this to a famous actor. It was pretty shocking to me to see this happen. But, it was a great learning experience.

What The Successful Director Said to The Famous Actor

A successful director personally and professionally disliked this actor. I was sitting in a chair behind the director while this took place. We were sitting behind a wall watching the monitors so the actor could not see what was taking place. After a few takes were shot, the director, was furious and threw his head set to the floor. He walked over to the actor and told him how much he loved the performance. He asked the actor to give him another choice, so he had a few options, but that he most likely would use the first take.

What The Director Said To Those Sitting By The Monitor

After talking to the actor, he walked back behind the wall and made the gesture
of putting his finger down his throat to show how disgusted he was with the actor.

What I Learned From Watching This Successful Director

Whenever someone says something to you, whether it is positive or negative,
hear what they say, but filter everything. People say all kinds of things to us.
Some information will be helpful, some irrelevant. Always remember to never
take anything that is said to you personally. If the information is helpful, great,
if not, throw it away.

Have You Ever Been Lied To?

Aaron Marcus getting kidnapped on the TV show Gotham

1 crazy thing actually happened after auditioning for the TV show Gotham. And, I was glad it did.

What Crazy Thing Can Happen After Auditioning

Actors audition, get callbacks, pinned (asked to hold specific dates for the shoot) and get booked and still not work on the project. There are so many reasons why this happens all the time. After auditioning for the TV show Gotham, my agent told me that he had some good and bad news for me.
The bad news was the part I read for was written out of the show. The good news was they liked my read and offered me another role.

Another Crazy Thing That Happened After Auditioning

Along with offering me another role on the show, the original character I read for only worked as a day player. The role they were offering me worked for a week on the show.

Actors Can Never Know What Crazy Things Can Happen After Auditioning

We never know what can happen to us after auditioning. Many characters cast as day players, worked one day and then the producers decided to make that character a regular on the show.
