Below are 5 successful strategies to act full-time.

Acting Full-Time Is Hard

It is very hard to pivot from acting part time to becoming a full-time actor. It took me years to learn by trial and error what worked and more importantly what didn’t work. Below are a few of the 5 strategies I used that can be seen in the video.

# 1 Successful Strategy – Be Honest

It is so important to be honest with others in the industry. Some people will tell you to exaggerate your list of credits on your resume. Perhaps add some plays that you never appeared in. Or, give the appearance of some film or TV jobs as being principal ones when you were actually an extra.
My opinion is that this is not a good way to be in this world or run your acting business. People can easily find out the truth about your credits and not want to work with you if you aren’t telling the truth.

Don’t lie about your location

Some people will tell agents that they live in the city where the agent is located even though that is not true. It is always best to let your agent know where you live and let the agent decide if he or she believes that will cause an issue with representing you.

#2 Successful Strategy – Be Good At Your Craft

You need to make sure that you are not only a talented actor, but also know how to audition. This way, when the opportunity comes for you to meet an agent or other industry professionals, you will let them see how good you are. If you are not ready, don’t pitch yourself to agents for representation. People will remember auditions that are not good. Wait until you are ready.

#3 Successful Strategy – Make Sure Your Materials Are Ready

In todays time, having not a good, nice or pretty headshot, but an effective one is crucial. Many agents will ask actors to upload their headshot online. If it doesn’t clearly show them how you should be submitted or look professional, it will be very hard to get a meeting.

Your resume also need to be in the proper format and have the correct information. If you don’t have a lot of credits, that is OK. Agents understand that it takes time to get experience and credits. But, actors need to understand what info is needed and what information should never be placed on an acting resume.

Watch this video and learn 7 absolutely sure ways to know an acting agent is legit – or running a scam.

Finding an Acting Agent is Hard

Finding a great acting agent can be hard. There are scammers who will say anything to fool us into thinking they are legit. Here are a few things to look out for when researching or meeting with an acting agent. Watch the video until the end and learn all 7 ways to know an acting agent is legit – or running a scam.

1 of 7 Absolutely Sure Ways to Know An Acting Agent is Legit – Or Running a Scam
Is The Agent Making You Promises or Guarantees

There are no guarantees in the acting world. If an agent is promising or guaranteeing you jobs or income, just ask for the money upfront. Seriously, there is no way to know if someone will get a lot of work or none.

2 of 7 Absolutely Sure Ways to Know An Acting Agent is Legit – Or Running a Scam
Is the Acting Agent Forcing You To Take Their Acting or Modeling Classes

It is one thing if an agent offers classes for both actors and models to be better prepared to have success in the industry. But, if you are told that they won’t represent you unless you take their class,
that would concern me.

3 of 7 Absolutely Sure Ways to Know An Acting Agent is Legit – Or Running a Scam
Is the Acting Agent Forcing You Have a Headshot Taken By Their Photographer

It is great if an agent brings in a great headshot photographer so the talent can have effective headshots for the agent to submit. But, it shouldn’t matter where the headshot is taken, as long as the photo catches people’s attention in a positive way. If being forced to have one taken, I would look elsewhere.

4 of 7 Absolutely Sure Ways to Know An Acting Agent is Legit – Or Running a Scam
Is the Acting Agent Demanding Upfront Fees

If the acting agent is demanding upfront fees in order to represent you, don’t walk, run away. Agents only get paid by taking a percentage from any booking their talent gets. Depending on the type of job or if the actor is in the Union (SAG-AFTRA) the agent should receive anywhere between 10-20% in commissions.

The one exception is if the agent asks the talent to pay a fee to be on their website. That is how some agents promote their talent and that is an acceptable cost.

I can’t believe what these two actors said.

Can't believe what these two actors said
Can’t Believe What These Two Actors Said

I can’t believe what these two actors said. One was while I was doing stand-in work on a TV show. The other situation took place during an audition.

Can’t Believe What These Two Actors Said

You can hear the entire story while watching the video, but here is the short version of what the actor said to me.
I was a stand-in on an NBC TV show for nearly 1.5 years. While shooting an outdoor scene,
we had a 30 minute break. The PA (production assistant) told me to stay warm and hang out
in one of the trailers nearby. I went there, only to find out it belonged to one of the stars of the show.
And, he was still in his trailer. I felt very embarrassed, confused and really uncomfortable.

Can’t Believe What The Star of a TV Show Said

I apologized to the actor and explained what happened. He told me it was fine to hang out in his trailer until I was needed on set. I told him that I will find another place to wait, but he insisted and said that he was more than happy to have me stay in his trailer. He left for a rehearsal.

Two minutes after he left, I heard a loud knock on the trailer door. The PA told me that the actor was furious that I was sitting in his trailer. The same guy who said it was fine for me to stay there. I immediately left. To this day, I still don’t understand what he was thinking, and why he actually insisted I stay. I am still clueless as to why he would say this to me.

Can’t Believe What This Actor Said

I was attending an audition in New York for a local TV commercial. While standing behind the actor who was about to audition, he quickly turned around and told me that they made a change and now the TV commercial was going to be a national spot. That changed things. Now, we are talking about a lot more money than just a local spot. I started feeling a little more nervous. When it was my turn to read, the casting director asked if I had any questions. I asked if it this was really a national spot. She said no, it was just a local commercial.

The actor clearly was trying to rase the stakes for me and place more pressure on me.
I still can’t believe what he said to me. Apparently, he was hoping that I would not give a good audition because of the distraction of the usage change.

After all of these years, I still can’t believe what these two actors said.

Not sure if you should turn down a job or audition?
Not sure if you should turn down a job or audition?

It can be a hard decision if actors should accept or turn down a job or audition offer.
In this video you will learn 3 Smart tips actors absolutely need when turning down jobs and auditions.

Will An Agent Be Upset If an Actor Turns Down a Job or Audition

Some actors get nervous about telling an agent that they don’t want to accept a job or audition. They fear that the agent will be upset and not submit them for future projects. Or, worse, they might get released.

If the actor clearly explains their reason for turning down a job or audition, then the agent might be upset but will understand and respect your reasoning.

1 Reason For Turning Down a Job or Audition

If the job is far away and the client is not covering transportation or lodging then that might be a reason to turn down a job or audition. Or, perhaps the job is not paying much. I have rarely turned down a job because of finances. Especially, when I was getting started, I wanted the experience and the contacts. Even if I didn’t make much I would have something new to add to my reel or portfolio (if it was a commercial modeling job.) I also assumed the client would like my work and would think of me for future projects. Hopefully, they would be better paying ones.

2. Already Booked for the Shoot Date

If you are already booked out for the shoot date then ask if either of the projects could change their schedule. If it is a feature film or TV show, the chances of that happening are slim, but it is always good to ask. You never know what might happen.

3. Not Comfortable With The Product – Material – Language or Scenes

If there is something about the project that makes you uncomfortable, then you want to turn it down.
You don’t want to get into long explanations (with the client/director) about what your issues are, but just say “I’m Not Available.” That is it. Don’t get into complicated discussions. This is your life and you don’t want to do something you will regret. Certainly tell your agent about the conflicts you have, but no one else.
Perhaps the agent could ask that language or scenes get changed, but that might be a long shot. The important thing is that as great as it is to work on a project, don’t cave in and regret doing something against your beliefs or morals.

I know this sounds really crazy, but not booking your last audition is still really great. In this video, I share why.

I know this sounds crazy.
I know this sounds crazy

How Can Not Booking Your Last Audition Still Be Great

The fact is that most of the auditions actors attend, they don’t book. It is not necessarily any type of statement about your look, acting or audition skills, and it certainly says nothing about who you are as a person. There are so many factors that go into booking and not booking an audition.

Why Not Booking Your Last Audition is Still Great

The reason why not booking your last audition is still great is this. There is no better way to introduce yourself to a casting director than by letting him or her watch you act. Sending emails, post cards (not sure if anyone still does this) mailing headshots and resumes can be helpful. But, there is absolutely no caparison to sending information about your self and actually be seen performing.

If the casting director already knows your work from previous auditions, then auditioning again gives you the opportunity to remind the casting director you are still around and available. They see so many actors that it is easy for them to forget about us. And, seeing you audition will remind the casting director he or she should be thinking of you for other new projects.

Even though it sounds crazy to think not booking your last audition is still great, it really makes sense.
It will keep you on the casting directors radar for something new. That is great.

NBC TV Show Homicide: Life On The Street
Andre Braugher and Aaron Marcus in the NBC TV show Homicide: Life On The Street

This 1 audition strategy got me cast on my first NBC TV show.

The Most Important Audition Strategy to Get You Cast On a TV Show

The most important audition strategy is not trying to figure out what a casting director might be wanting in the audition. There is no way to know what a casting director wants or needs from an actor. Don’t even try to figure this out.

My 1 audition strategy is to have fun. I play around with ideas that might not be the most obvious, but still makes sense for the character.

The audition is when the actor can be creative and do anything that feels right and interesting. That is how I decide on choices for auditions.

My Audition Strategy For This NBC TV Show

My character, Mr. Cahill, was the executive director of a wealthy country club. Three members of his club are murdered. Instead of showing my sadness for these losses, during my interview with the homicide detectives (Andre Braugher and Kyle Secor) I took a different approach.

Although I felt bad about the murders, I was also feeling the loss of income from three family members. I was the money person at the club. And, I was concerned that other members might leave. And, now it will be harder to attract new families. As you will hear in the video, I got a call back and a few notes from the director. And, I booked on the show.

You will learn how a star actually acted unprofessional and nasty to me on a film.
Many years ago I was working as an extra on a film. Since there was a boxing scene, the casting director, whom I knew, needed thousands of extras and asked if I would help her by working on this project.

One of the film’s stars actually acted unbelievably unprofessional and nasty. Here is what happened.

How A Star Actually Acted Unprofessional and Nasty

I was shocked by how unprofessional and nasty the star was to me

I worked for around 12 days on this project. The first 10 were great. Then in was on day 11 when one of the stars actually acted unprofessional and nasty.

I was the boxing inspector and sat next to one of the stars during the fight. In between rounds, it was my (the inspectors) job to walk up some steps, climb into the boxing ring and make sure nothing illegal was being given to the boxer.

We had some great conversations over the first 10 days. Then on day 11, before I climbed out of the ring
so the fight could begin, I needed to first wait for the “cut man” to finish working on the boxer. Once he was done, he would grab the stool and I would follow him down the steps. After I began walking down, then the star (who was the trainer/manager) would follow me.

This is When The Star Actually Acted Unprofessional and Nasty

For some reason, the cut man had to wait a few seconds for the boxer to get up from the stool he was sitting on. This caused a delay in him going down the steps. This also meant I couldn’t walk down the stairs. He finally started walking down. As I was about to make my place my right foot on the first step, the star pushed me very hard from behind to hurry me up.

What I Had to Do Because The Star Was Unprofessional And Nasty

I was pushed so hard that I couldn’t place my foot on the steps. There were two choices I could make. I could either try and land on the bottom step and hope I didn’t twist or break an ankle. Or, jump over all of the steps and hope I didn’t get hurt by landing on the hard surface.

As you will hear me discuss in the video, there was a third option I quickly thought about but decided not to do.

Acting Unprofessional and Nasty Should Never Happen

It doesn’t matter how famous one has become, there is no excuse for acting unprofessional or nasty. Especially, when it comes to potentially physically hurting someone. Eventually, the actor apologized
and we were OK after that. But, that horrible experience has not left me. Please, don’t ever do something unprofessional or nasty while working with another actor.

All actors need to learn how to feel better after not booking an audition. They must understand that getting an audition is very exciting. All actors need to know that being granted an audition is hard. So many headshots and resumes have been submitted to the casting director. And, only a very small percentage are given the opportunity to read for a role.

Getting the audition is winning. Actors have full control over their audition, but absolutely no control over who gets cast.

Casting decisions are not personal decisions. There are most likely no connections between not getting the job and your acting skills. Perhaps you need more practice or education to improve your acting/auditioning skills. But, most of the time, it is simply a statement that you weren’t the perfect person.

Remember, you gave your best at the audition. You did everything you wanted to do. Be proud of yourself for your preparation and offering the casting director an interesting choice.

The 1 audition sides mistake that many actors make can kill your audition and prevent you from booking the job.

Audition Tips For Beginners
knowing how to properly hold the sides is crucial to giving a great audition

1 Audition Sides Mistake That Many Actors Make

Before explaining what sides mistake many actors make, I want to first make sure you know what sides are.

There are two things that actors will read during auditions (assuming you are not completely off book.)

If you are reading for a TV commercial, then you will be reading “copy.” Those are the words to a TV commercial.

If you are auditioning for a film or TV show, then you will be reading “sides.” It functions the same way. But, the terminology is different.

Some actors make a huge mistake by not holding their sides or holding their sides straight down. When they are looking down at the sides, the camera only sees their forehead.
This is not good. Casting directors and directors need to see an actors reaction when they are being spoken to.

If an actor doesn’t remember their lines, then instead of stopping the audition, they can simply glance at the words.

Where Should Actors Hold The Sides

I highly recommend having the sides held at eye level, but on the side.
You can’t have your face blocked during your audition with the sides. When you watch the video, you will see exactly where I place the sides during my auditions.

Is it a Mistake to Hold Sides During an Audition?

Even if you think you have the lines perfectly memorized, it is still very helpful to have the sides in your hand. This gives you the option to look
at the words, just in case you need to during your audition.

The 1 biggest mistake actors make during auditions might surprise you. No, it is not messing up lines. It is not a wardrobe issue. No, it is not knowing your character. Keep reading and learn.

what is the 1 biggest mistake actors make during auditions
The 1 Biggest Mistake Actors Make During Auditions

The 1 Biggest Mistake Actors Make During Auditions

The biggest mistake is something many actors don’t even think about. Especially, for beginning actors. Actors work so hard at getting the lines down. Actors study the lines of the other actor/actors so we know when to say our lines. Actors think about relaxing themselves so they are comfortable during the audition. But, below is the 1 biggest mistake actors make.

Not listening to the other actor
An actor not listening or really hearing the other actor

Actors Must Listen and Really Hear the Other Actor During an Audition

It is not just about getting your lines said “perfectly.” It is always about really hearing, listening and reacting to the other actor. Without listening and reacting well the audition won’t be believable.

What Are You Doing When Having a Conversation?

When you are having a conversation with someone, you listen to what the other person is saying, reacting and responding. That is what acting is all about. Hearing, listening, reacting and responding. It sounds so simple, but it is the number 1 mistake actors make during auditions. And, it can be difficult.

I made a horrible audition mistake that cost me a job for a national TV commercial. Watch and learn the 1 simply solution.

This audition mistake cost me a job

I drove a total of 14 hours for the initial audition for a national TV commercial. Then I drove an additional 14 hours for the call back.

The national spot was for a beautiful hotel. The scene had the woman (who was playing my wife) and I celebrating a special moment at the hotel. We were in love and having a wonderful time.

A Horrible Audition Mistake Cost Me a Job

During the audition reaching over and putting my arm around the other actor’s shoulder felt right to me. We were in love, having an amazing time and that is what my instincts were telling me to do. Apparently, it was not OK for her.

A Solution to My Audition Mistake

After putting my arm around her shoulder, I could feel her body
getting tense. And, she was gently pulling away from me. I was
surprised and taken out of our scene while she seemed so uncomfortable with me. We were husband and wife, in love and now there was no positive chemistry between us.

The Simple Solution to My Audition Mistake

I should have simply asked her prior to doing the scene, if it felt right
to me, would it be OK if I put my arm around her or held her hand. If she had said no, then that would have been fine. At least there would not have been any awkward moments during the call back. And, by discussing this ahead of time, she would have been better prepared for what could happen during our scene.

I was so fortunate because of 1 actors act of kindness changed my career.

1 Actors Act of Kindness Changed My Acting Career

I had a contact who knew an agent at the William Morris Agency. I sent the agent my materials and she asked me to meet with her.

On the train ride to New York, I saw an actor I had worked with about a year ago. I decided to follow him and re-introduce myself.

He asked what I was doing in New York. I told him I was meeting with an agent. He asked to look at my materials. He was so nice. He wrote down the name and number of his New York agent and gave it to me. He said keep it in case you find yourself looking for an agent.

Didn’t Realize 1 Actor Was Offering an Act of Kindness That Would Change My Acting Career

Since I was going to meet with an agent at a global agency I certainly accepted his generous information but didn’t think I would ever contact his agent.

Meeting With The Willam Morris Agent

The agent from The William Morris Agency was very nice to me. She asked me to give her another headshot and resume. She noticed the area code on my resume read 301. She asked where I used to live. I told her that I still lived in Maryland. She had already seen my resume when I initially sent her my materials, so I was really surprised by her questioning my area code.

Not a Good Meeting

She told me that she couldn’t work with anyone who didn’t live in New York and thanked me for coming. I was devastated. Here, I thought I might have representation with a global agency and now, she was saying thanks but no thanks.

This is How 1 Actors Act of Kindness Changed My Acting Career

Honestly, I just wanted to take the next train back home. But, I thought that while I was already in New York, I might as well call the agent whose name I was given.

The agent told me that Tony (the actor who I spoke with on the train) had called the agent, told her how good my materials were and that I might be calling her. She told me to stop by.

I Began Working With the Agent

The agent made it clear that she didn’t like working with out of town talent because they typically stop attending go-sees (modeling auditions) after not getting booked a few times.

I promised her that as long as I wasn’t already booked out for a job, I will always travel to New York whenever she called me. We tested things out for 3 months and I worked with the agency for over a decade – until they closed.

1 Actors Act of Kindness Changed My Acting Career

Although this was a commercial modeling agency (the best in New York) it allowed me to easily make contacts with acting agencies as well.

I have never forgotten what Tony’s act of kindness did for me. He truly changed my acting career and life. That is why I spend so much time trying to help others. I know what 1 simple act of kindness can do to change one’s career and life.

Beware, sometimes bad things actually happen on film sets. This bad thing happened to me. Like with any type of job, sometimes we run into people who are not very nice. After 37 + years as a full-time actor and nearly 1,300 bookings, I am bound to run into a handful of bad situations. And, I want to share one of them with you so you can prevent this bad thing from happening to you.

Learn What you Can/Can’t Do to Help Prevent Bad Things From Happening On Film Sets

This was not where bad things happened to me. This still was from a TV commercial I worked on.
This is not where bad things happened to me on a film set.
This was a really fun TV commercial I worked on

I just began my acting career and was working as an extra on a feature film set. The scene had a number of us sitting at a bar, drinking and talking.

Many takes were done. I noticed that since we were actually drinking sometimes at the beginning of a take, there was very little liquid in my glass.

My Mistake Caused a Bad Thing to Happen On a Film Set

I never would have believed that what I did next would have caused the first bad thing to happen to me on a film set.

I thought it would be helpful to let the props person (who was in charge of all of the glasses and drinks) know that the level of my drink was very low at the beginning of some of the takes.

This was when bad things actually happened to me on a film set
This is when the bad thing happened to me on a set

I mentioned it to him in a nice way. I wasn’t accusing him of not paying attention. I just wanted to make sure he knew about the continuity issue. He didn’t take it well. He yelled “Are you in the props department?” I told him that I was not. He then continued to say quite a few things that I won’t repeat here, but just to say, they weren’t very complimentary. That was the first time something bad actually happened to me on a film set.

Knowing Job Responsibilities Help Prevent Bad Things To Happen On Film Sets

Even though now I know what I should and should not be doing on a film set, if I feel comfortable, and like those I am working with, then I would still say something if I see a problem. I don’t want there to be an issue once editing begins because nothing was said. But, I am very careful about the situation. There have been times, where I don’t get involved. And, sometimes I will still say something if the situation feels right.

There are 4 reasons actors aren’t offered a contract.
Here are 3 solutions to help you get signed with an acting agent.

meeting with an agent
4 reasons why actors are being offered an agent’s contract

#1 Reason Why Actors Aren’t Offered a Contract

Most, but not all agents want their actors to already have the materials needed for the agent to submit and promote the actor. That means having an effective headshot and a resume in the proper format that casting directors and other industry professionals expect.

Not all agents are willing to take the time and energy to help explain to the talent what is needed. They might be way too busy trying to get their other actors seen by casting directors.

#2 Reason Why Actors Aren’t Offered a Contract

Some actors want to have an agent represent them, but maybe they need more experience or training. The actor might need stronger auditioning and acting skills before an agent is willing to have them represent the agency on auditions. Some agents are willing to help their actors be better prepared for auditions and have better acting skills, but many want actors who are ready to work.

#3 Reason Why Actors Aren’t Offered a Contract

You might have great materials and are a very skilled actor, but it is possible that the agent already has too many people in your category.
They want to be able to focus on the actors who are already signed with the agency. So, the agent might not want to take you on for that reason.

#4 Reason Why Actors Aren’t Offered a Contract

You could have a great look, strong materials and are very talented and still get turned down and not have an agent offer you a contract. This could be the case if you don’t have the look that the agency needs. Maybe you have a “regular looking person’s” look and the modeling agency only signs and works with actors and models who have very high end looks. That would be another reason you wouldn’t be offered a contract.

How long does it really take to hear from casting or your agent after auditioning.

Audition Strategies
Auditioning for a TV show

It Can Take a Long Time to Hear From Casting After Auditioning For a Film

It can take a short or long time to hear back from casting or your agent after auditioning for a film. Sometimes I have gotten a call back days after the audition. And, there have been times where it took months.

There is no way to know how long it can actually take to hear back from your agent or casting. Projects can get delayed. Sometimes the star of the project is no longer available. Finances can play a role in films being placed in limbo.

So, there is no way even guess when you might hear back from a film audition.

When Can You Expect to Hear Back After Auditioning for a TV Show

Typically, actors will hear back fairly soon after auditioning for a TV show. Normally, while one episode is being shot, the director is prepping for the next episode.
It is not unusual to hear back from your agent or casting within a few days after your audition. It could be a call back or an offer to work on the show.

Since TV shows can take anywhere between 7-10 to shoot, the casting for the next episode happens pretty quickly.
