Actors should stop trying to read a casting director’s mind when preparing for an audition.

After 40 years in the acting industry, I’ve learned that one of the biggest audition mistakes actors make is trying to be mind readers instead of storytellers.

In this quick tip video, I reveal why actors should never try to read the casting director’s mind and give an audition based on what they think the CD wants. Quite often, they don’t know what they are looking for in an actor’s audition.

And, actors should never make “safe choices” because they are concerned about taking the character in the wrong direction. Casting directors and directors prefer authentic choices over ‘safe’ reads. This simple mindset shift transforms your audition results.

Whether you’re auditioning for commercials, films, or TV, this approach works across all genres. Stop second-guessing yourself and start booking more roles with this game-changing audition strategy.

Lean how I changed my audition strategy after 40 years of acting.

After four decades in the acting industry, I’ve learned something counterintuitive about acting auditions: saying NO to auditions can sometimes be a great acting strategy and help your life and career. Selective auditions, in the right situation, can sometimes be better than saying yes to everything.

In this video, I share the mindset shift that changed everything – when to turn down opportunities, how to evaluate what’s worth your time, and why being selective can actually open more doors. If you’re tired of spinning your wheels on auditions that go nowhere, this strategy could transform your approach.

The #1 Acting Advice That Destroys Careers

The absolutely #1 worst acting advice I ever got destroys careers.

Some people say that if you really want success, you can’t have a backup plan or side-hustle jobs. Actors who are serious about having success need to focus and work full-time as an actor without any ‘distractions.’

I believe this advice is not only wrong, it’s dangerous. In this video I share why having another income source can HELP your acting career and protect your mental health.

2 Proven Tips to Get Commercial Modeling Jobs

Stop wondering why you’re not booking commercial modeling jobs. Learn 2 proven tips that get actors commercial modeling jobs.

After coaching hundreds of actors, I’ve noticed the same two mistakes costing actors commercial modeling go-sees (auditions for models) and jobs.

I’ve used these 2 methods to book 800+ commercial modeling jobs.

Tip #1: Create powerful test shots that look like actual ads. Most actors (like I did when getting started) are unprepared when having test shots (sample photos to build a portfolio) taken. Instead of asking the photographer, “What should I do,” instead, create photos that look like ads that also clearly shows industry professionals how to cast you.

Tip #2: You’re an ACTOR – use those skills. Stop giving one expression during the shoot. Photographers, ad agency professionals and clients want to see emotional range. Give them multiple layers of emotions they can use.

If you’ve been struggling to break into commercial modeling as an actor, this could change everything.

I also explain why this strategic approach can help build relationships that lead to bigger opportunities. Sometimes, the smartest career moves aren’t about the immediate job.

Watch the video and learn about 23 Great Side Hustle Jobs For Actors and Models – many of them you probably never heard about.

IT IS HARD BEING AN ACTOR OR MODEL

It is very hard to make a living as an actor or model. This is especially true when you are first getting started. If you are wanting to make acting or modeling your full-time job, here are a few suggestions to help you pursue your dreams and still make a living.

1. Make sure you have enough money saved up so you can live without any income for at least 3-6 months. This will allow you to focus all of your attention on acting or modeling.

2. Make sure you find a great headshot and or commercial photographer. This will give you your best chance of finding an agent. And, you can begin marketing and submitting yourself for projects.

3. If you are an actor, make sure your resume is in the proper format.

4. Have the needed equipment and learn how to shoot home auditions.

5. It is best to have supplemental income (cash flow) that is generated without having to spend much time generating the money. Rental properties /Air B&B can be great sources of monthly income. Or, having strong financial investments that offer monthly income can be very helpful.

However, most actors and models aren’t fortunate enough to be in those situations.

23 Side Hustle Jobs

Below are 23 side hustle jobs that allow actors and models to earn money and still have time to audition and work on sets.

Learning how to shoot headshots or commercial photos could be a great side hustle job

None of these are the typical bartending or waiter type jobs. And, quite a few listed allow actors to use their skills while earning money to cover monthly expenses.

At the bottom of the channel page, let me and others know about other side hustle jobs you have done that helped you pay the bills while pursuing acting or modeling jobs.

Many of these jobs are ones you are familiar with. There are two listings that I will explain in more detail.

Role Playing Jobs

1. Government agencies, such as TSA, Homeland Security, FBI, etc… hire actors to help train employees. You could be someone trying to smuggle something illegal onto a plane, and the TSA employee needs to practice how to deal with this situation.

Some law schools hire actors to allow their students to practice working in a courtroom in a mock trial. The actor could be hired as a witness or a jury member. The actor will be given all of the background information of the case and answer appropriately. It is essentially, an improv session.

Some attorneys want to practice and get a reaction about an opening argument or other aspects of their upcoming trial. A “role player” is hired to help test ideas and give the attorney a better perspective of his or her argument.

Standardized Patient Work

2. Actors are hired by some teaching hospitals and medical schools. It gives the medical school students or residents the opportunity to have more experience with examining patients. The actor is told about their disease. Things like, how long they have been sick, side effects of their medication, the types of medication they are taking, how they are currently feeling, etc…

Although the backstory is not memorized, the actor needs to be very familiar with their disease. And, they must be able to answer all of the questions asked.

After the exam, the actor writes a report and grades the student/doctor on how well he/she did during the exam. This is also a great opportunity to practice improv.

I hope you find these side hustle jobs helpful.

I have had some tricky audition surprises. All actors must be aware. Sometimes casting directors will ask an actor something that can feel tricky and really surprise the actor. But with the correct knowledge these tricky situations don’t have to catch us off guard. At all auditions, we must be ready for anything we are asked while auditioning.

These tricky audition surprises have happened to me. The surprise can be as simple as having a casting director ask you, “tell me about yourself.” What I always do in this situation is to share something about me that connects with the character. For instance, if my character likes to spend time outdoors in nature, I will talk about how I love camping or doing things outside. I will never just talk about what projects I have worked on. They have a resume for that information. This is just one of a few things you might not have been ready for but can be crucial when the casting director or director wants to get a better sense of who you are. After watching the video, you will know exactly how to make sure you are fully prepared for your audition and ready for any tricky audition surprise.

The Super Bowl is known for its big-budget, star-studded commercials, but this year… wow. I found the Super Bowl 2025 ads were disastrous. As an actor, I couldn’t help but be shocked how none of the ads I watched made me laugh, think, or find interesting.

I did not watch every commercial. Since my “Ravens” were not playing in the Super Bowl, there wasn’t that much interest in the game for me. So, I didn’t see all of the ads, but I did see many of them. I can’t remember any commercial that truly connected me with a product. They all felt like re-done formulas. I have seen these ideas many times before.

I could be wrong, but It felt like the ad agencies decided to hire a famous actor and then fit the content around that person. My thoughts are the ads would have been better if the idea was created first and then decisions were made about who could best make it interesting. It was also so disappointing that that so many famous people were hired instead of other very talented actors who certainly could have used the money.

I understand it. Clients like to hang out with famous people. And they believe that well-known people will help sell a product. This might be true, but there have been many popular commercials performed by regular actors who have done amazing things to help promote a product.

Did You Watch The Super Bowl Ads?

If you saw the ads, did any of the spots stand out to you, either positively or negatively? If so, what did you think? Share your thoughts on the Acting and Modeling Quick Tips Channel so we can all benefit from your knowledge and insights.
