Getting rejected by an agent never feels good. But, it is crucial to understand that there are many reasons someone is not offered a contract from an agent. And, it is so important to know that this might say absolutely nothing about your talent, abilities or how far you can go in the industry.

Getting a Referral is the Best Way to Sign With an Agent

The best way to get signed with an agent is to have someone refer you to the agent. Some larger agencies won’t even see actors unless they were referred.

Ask friends from acting classes or other actors who you know if they will refer you to their agent.

Make Sure Your Materials Are Great Before Submitting to an Agent

It is so important that actors have great materials (headshot/resume) before submitting to an agent. You always want to give a great first impression. People will remember negative things, even if you create a better headshot and resume later.

Ask The Agent To Recommend Another Agency

Maybe you are not a perfect fit for the agency. Perhaps the agent already represents too many people in your category. Or, maybe the agent doesn’t get the type of work you are submitted for.

So, if that is the case, ask the agent for names of other acting agencies in your area that might be a better fit for your skills and look.

Many years ago I used this acting technique and it got me upgraded while working on a TV spot.

I Had No Idea I Got Upgraded On The TV Spot

Normally, when an extra gets upgraded to a principal, the actor is told and
has to fill out some paperwork. I left the set of the TV spot and had no
idea I was upgraded.

I am guessing that the upgrade was not finalized until the director was looking at all of the footage from the TV commercial.

I Was One of Hundreds of People Working On This Spot

We were shooting a health care commercial in a large theater. I was seated way up in the balcony. My spot was very very far away from the 3 principal actors in the TV spot.

When I was doing extra work, I always treated it the same way I would as a principal. Morally, I felt like I am being paid to perform. So, I did everything I can to help make the project look good (even if I don’t think I would be seen.)

And, I find it much more enjoyable to really act, even though no one might see me.

This Is The Technique I Used to Get Upgraded

As one of the principal actors was saying her lines on stage, another principal began coughing. This interrupted the performing actor. Then, a third principal (who was supposed to work for this health care system) walked over to the coughing audience member to help him.

The technique I used to get upgraded was simply acting in the moment. Even though I knew I was so far away from the action, I angrily stared at the coughing audience member. I did not like the fact that he was disturbing the performance and my experience at the theater.

I was just an extra on the TV spot, and it was a fun day for me.

How I Heard I Had Been Upgraded

A few weeks after the shoot, I saw one of the producers of the TV spot
in the same studio where I was doing some voice over work. She saw me and said “Congratulations.” I said thanks, but asked her why? She told me that during the shoot, when the camera was panning the audience, the director saw my reactions, loved them and had a camera shoot close ups of me.

I had no idea I was being filmed. I certainly could not see the camera pointing towards me while being way up in the balcony.

This Acting Technique Will Make Your Time
On The Set Much More Enjoyable, Even If You Aren’t Upgraded

I don’t want to give you the impression that by using this acting technique, there is a good chance you will be upgraded. It does happen, but only every
once in a while. But, you will be helping out production by giving it your all and you will have a much more enjoyable time on set.

Have You Ever Been Upgraded On a Set?

If you have ever gotten upgraded while working as an extra, please share your experience in the comment section of the YouTube Channel.

Do you want to know how to be a hand model for TV commercials? Many people think that hand models need to be fashion models. Quite a few hand models who get booked for TV commercials are actors whose hands work and look right for advertising ads.

What Do Your Hands Need to Look Like to Be a Hand Model?

Good hands were needed for this ad
Aaron Marcus in a pharmaceutical ad

There are different types of ads where various looking hands are needed.

Most hand models who get cast have long and thin fingers. They must not be scratched up, bruised or flaky. Skin must me smooth. They must look
great while holding a product.

And, sometimes, just the opposite is needed. If you are doing an ad for
construction equipment, they most likely will want rougher looking hands.

Hand Modeling For TV Commercials

Being a hand model for TV commercials is a little different than
other types of hand modeling jobs.

For my job, as you will learn about in the video, I had to take a lot of
directions from the director of the TV commercial. My hand had to move
in a specific way to make the food look interesting and enticing. This was not a still shot, so my hand had to move in a specific direction and look graceful.

Be Careful What You Eat and Drink Before a Hand Modeling Job

Hand models need to be very conscious of what they eat or drink before a hand modeling job. If you can get a little jittery when consuming caffeine,
then I would suggest you don’t drink or eat anything with caffeine. You can’t
have your hand shaking at all during the job.

Most Commercial Agents Represent Hand Models

Most commercial agents who represent actors for TV commercials and commercial models will also represent and submit talent for hand modeling jobs. You will need to send photos of your hand to the agent to make sure they are perfect for commercial modeling work. Most hand models (who don’t do this full-time) have photos of themselves and make sure their hands are clearly visible. This allows photographers, art and creative directors at ad agencies and the client to see if your hands are right for the job.

Have You Done Any Hand Modeling Work

If you have ever worked as a hand model, please share your experience in the comment section of the YouTube Channel.

Want to create a powerful film/TV audition? Here are 2 amazing tips.

Preparing to Audition for a Film

Creating Powerful Film/TV Auditions Can Be Hard

Many actors don’t realize how difficult it can be creating auditions that grab the attention of casting directors/directors. When actors don’t get call backs or book the job, they think they aren’t talented.

Using Specific Audition Techniques Are Crucial

In some ways, the film/TV audition can be harder than performing on the set. You will have much more information about your character after you
get booked. For auditions, we have to make specific choices, but they could change a lot after being cast.

It’s Easier to Give a Better Performance On-Set

It is easier to give a stronger performance on set than while auditioning. You have incredible actors to work with. The set will make things feel more real. This allows us to dive deeper into our character. For the film/TV audition, you might give one read to a reader, and it is done.

Know the Life of Your Character Prior to the Scene Starting

Knowing what your character is doing and feeling right before you say your first word, will make your read much stronger. Watch the video to see this in action.

Never Start Your Film/TV Audition With Your First Word

Think of a word or a sound that gives you a reason to say your first word.
Once again, watch the video to see how this is done. Softly say it to yourself. You don’t want the mic or anyone to hear you. This technique makes your conversation sound much more real.

Don’t End Your Film/TV Audition on the last Word

Don’t end your film/TV audition on the last word. Always extend the audition for 1-3 seconds. Let the audition fade out. The video will show you how this is done.

When listening to a great song, it will take you somewhere. Most songs fade out slowly. This allows the listener to enjoy the feeling longer.

Watch and learn about ADR work. You will get 2 tips teaching you about this type of VO (voice over ) work.

ADR work is a division of VO (voice over) work. All actors need to know about ADR work

Had a Great Experience Doing ADR Work

I had worked on a network TV show. A short time after the shoot, I was contacted by production to come back to New York and re-do my lines.

I thought doing ADR work meant that they hated my read.

I Thought I Messed Up My Lines When Asked to Do ADR Work

When I got an E-mail stating that I was needed to do ADR work gave me a bad feeling. My initial thoughts were that they didn’t like the read and needed me to record them differently.

It’s easy to feel paranoid in the industry (at least I was) until I learned a lot more about how the industry works.

The Extras in the Scene Caused Me to Do ADR Work

As it turned out, the extra’s in the scene were talking while I was saying my lines. The sound person couldn’t get a clean track of my lines. So, I had to do the lines again. I did them exactly how I originally read my lines. This voice over work is called ADR.

Bad headshot can kill an actor’s career. Here are 4 tips for eye-catching photos.

Not a good headshot from an early photo shoot. Not believable and so posed!

Don’t Do This During a Headshot Photo Shoot

Many actors (like I did when I first got started) walk into a headshot session and ask the headshot photographer what they should do. I was told to smile and make faces. Out of hundreds of shots, I was able to salvage one photo.

4 Essential Tips For Creating an Eye-Catching Headshot

  1. How to best position yourself in front of the camera
  2. Know “your type” and understand what roles are right for you
  3. Understand the proper wardrobe to wear
  4. Know what type of background is best

How to Position Yourself For the Camera During a Headshot Session

You don’t want to have your shoulders and face square to the camera. Always have one shoulder slightly closer with your head slightly tilted to your back shoulder.

Know Your Type For a Headshot Photo Shoot

You must know if you are the leading woman or man or the next door neighbor type. This will help you understand what emotions are needed in your look. As you can see in my headshot below, I am the “nice guy,” professional, successful, someone you would share personal information with and someone who is friendly and approachable.

I am thinking of people who I care about during the headshot session. This allows my brain to think and feel the emotions needed. And, that energy shoot out of my eyes.

Wardrobe For a Headshot Session

Your wardrobe should be like nice wall paper. It enhances your image, but no one stares at it. Don’t wear anything that grabs people’s attention. You want them to focus on your face. No jewelry that stands out. Keep your wardrobe simple.

The Background For a Headshot Photo Shoot

If you are shooting outside, make sure that the background of your headshot is blurred out completely. Don’t allow any beautiful scenery to be seen. If people see trees, buildings, oceans, mountains, flowers, etc… behind you, then they are not focused on your face.

Many Actors Search For Acting Agents Online

Finding a legitimate agent for acting can be difficult. There are a lot of actors who start their search for an acting agent by doing a Google search for agents near them. Finding names of agents for acting through a Google search will not help you know if the agent is right for you or even a good agent.

If the other actor is familiar with your work and is willing to recommend you to his or her agent, then that is the absolute best way to introduce yourself to an agent.

There’s 1 thing actors need to do and this will have them give a better audition. And, this 1 thing can happen by asking a quick question to the casting director. Watch the video to learn about this one question.

Why Casting Directors Want Actors to Give Great Auditions

Casting directors want actors to give great auditions. They are rooting for us and will do what they can to help. It is in their best interest for actors to give interesting auditions. It makes the casting director look good when they submit interesting reads to the director and others involved in the project.

This 1 Question Can Give You a Better Audition

If you find yourself in a casting directors office, quite often you will
hear the word “action” which is telling you when to being your audition.

I like taking one or two seconds to prepare myself prior to starting my audition. This moment allows me to quickly prepare for the scene.

THE QUESTION FOR THE CASTING DIRECTOR

Before I begin reading, the question I like asking the casting directer is if I could have 1 second. Or, sometimes, I don’t even ask and just take that moment (if I have the first line.)

I think of a word or two that helps me prepare and puts me in the right frame of mind for my first line. I softly say the word, then begin the audition.

WHAT WORD OR WORDS DO I USE RIGHT BEFORE AUDITIONING

If I am a frustrated consumer in the scene, I might angrily say the word, “Come on,” in a frustrated way. This is said softly, only to myself. No one else hears what I am saying.

Finding the right key word/words helps me get into the right mind frame for the character. Then I begin the first word/line of the audition.

Asking the casting director for that moment can be so helpful in having your read be believable. It also shows that you have a process/technique and that you are not just “winging” your audition.

Here’s the simplest and easy way to add a photo to your acting resume in Word.

Why You Should Add Your Headshot Onto a Resume

Most actors only have words on their acting resume. I like adding my headshot on the right hand corner of my resume for marketing purposes.

Industry professionals will see your headshot, flip it over and scan your resume. By having a headshot photo on that page, your face will be seen again by an agent, casting director, director or other industry professionals.

All marketers say that the image of what is being sold should be seen by customers many times. Having a headshot on your resume is way to be seen again.

Another Advantage of Adding a Photo to Your Acting Resume

If you have a two headshots that are submitted for different types of roles, then you can show both looks.

Maybe you have a beard, but are fine with shaving for a specific role.
By having another photo showing you clean shaven on your resume, allows people can see that other look. That can be so helpful to casting and to you.

Why is it Hard to Add a Photo to Your Acting Resume in Word?

If you try and insert a photo into Word, all of the text moves around. It is impossible to place your photo exactly where you want it to be. When you watch these 4 easy steps, it will be a simple adding a photo to your resume.

Actors need to beware of this audition trap and avoid this mistake.

avoid this audition trap

Common Audition Trap

It is easy for actors to try and show off their talents and skills during an audition. They want the casting director and director to see how talented they are during their read. Some actors think that the focus needs to be
on their character or order the others to see their talents.

Ask This Question to Avoid The Trap

Avoid this common audition trap. While studying your sides, the essential question that needs asking is whom the scene is about. If the scene is not about your character, don’t fall into the trap and try and make it about your character. Be true to the scene.

Quite often, the smaller roles in big projects have the actor serving the scene by helping share information about one of the stars.

It is essential that the actor reads their lines with that in mind.
Don’t ever try to make the scene about your character when not called for. It will make it very difficult to book the role.

Do You Have Any Audition Tips to Share?

Sometimes actors can’t or don’t want to accept an offer from an agent. Watch this video until the end and learn the 4 perfect words to say when declining an acting job or audition.

Will Our Agent Drop Us If We Decline a Job or Audition

Some actors and models immediately get concerned that our agent will
stop representing us if we say no to an acting job or audition (especially at the beginning of their career.)

Some actors and models think the agent won’t think we are reliable and are waisting their time if we say no to a project.

Some Actors Use The Wrong Words When Declining a Job or Audition

There are many ways to decline the opportunity to audition or work on a project. Some words that are said by an actor can be very harmful to their career. These words are not said maliciously. They are honest comments.

A Few Wrong Words Actors Use When Declining a Job or Audition

Some actors will say the wrong words to the agent, director, casting director or others involved in the project. They might say they are turning the audition or job down for a variety of reasons.

1. The script is not written very well.
2. They don’t like the concept of the piece
3. It doesn’t seem very professional
4. They are above this type of project

Don’t Decline the Audition or Job With a Critique

Don’t use any words describing why you don’t like the script

You don’t want to be a critic. You don’t want to analyze the script
and make others feel you are above their writing.

Just use the 4 words I describe at the end of the video to turn down
any project you don’t want to audition for or work on. This is a much
cleaner way of running your career.

Keeping acting and modeling records can make you money.

It is so important for both actors and models to keep acting and modeling records that list:

  • acting and modeling agents
  • casting directors
  • photographers
  • art and creative directors at advertising agencies
  • producers
  • directors
  • and other industry professionals they have connected with.

This record allows you to stay in touch with them. Having this list makes it easy for you to let them know what you have been doing.

Sending short emails also let’s them know that you are around and available for auditions, go-sees (the audition for models) and jobs.

Get Repeat Business From Your Acting and Modeling Records

After you have given a great audition or did a wonderful acting or modeling job for a client, they will want to hire you again. They know you, your work and will be comfortable knowing that you will do help their project be great.

That is why it is so important to have acting and modeling records. And to stay in touch with the industry professionals you have worked with in the past.

Agent’s and casting directors don’t want you being honest with them. At least during certain situations. Here’s why.

Be Honest With Agents and Casting Directors – Most of the Time

It is essential for actors to be honest with other industry professionals.

Not only is it crucial for your credibility in the industry, but it is also necessary in order to have success.

I have heard that some actors are not honest when creating their acting resume. They either add in certain productions they never worked on, or gave the impression that extra work was actually a principal job.

Agent’s and casting directors will not work with people who are not honest.

This is When Agents and Casting Directors Don’t Want Actors to Be Honest

If you are meeting with an agent or auditioning with a casting director,
you don’t want to sound like a complainer.

If you had a tough time finding the agent’s or casting directors office, got stuck in traffic had parking issues, fights with family members, they DON’TWANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS!!

They are seeing a lot of people and need to get through their meeting with you or audition. If you come off sounding like a winer or complainer, they might not want to work with you. And, you are taking up a lot of their time with things other than what needs to get accomplished that day.

At this point, you probably don’t have that type of personal relationship with the casting director and certainly not the agent if you are attending a meeting about representation.

The Best Way to Not Be Honest With Agents and Casting Directors

If you are having a bad day, for whatever reason, if asked how you are, use your acting skills and tell them you are GREAT.

Not being honest in that situation can go a very long way. This will leave the industry professionals with a much better impression of you.

Don’t sound cranky, angry or bitter. This is not a good first impression.

Have you Ever Not Been Honest

Along with working with the great Tom Hanks, the other two were Ellen Burstyn and Dame Judi Dench. All three were just wonderful people to work with on sets.

A Producer Once Shared This Advice With Me

I was working on a TV show and the producer said something that I want to share with you. His advice was very helpful.

He finds that stars are generally easy to work with. His has found that people just getting started are easy as well.
It is the ones who have been in the industry for a long time and never
reached the success they expected are the difficult actors.
I still remember that comment and I find it to be pretty accurate.

The Atmosphere On The Set
Starts From The Top

I have always found that the atmosphere on a film set starts with the director. Certainly, the stars of the project will effect the feel of the production as well.

If the director is nice and thoughtful, it works its way down to the others. The friendly atmosphere will work its way to the The 1st AD (Assistant Director) to the crew and down to the PA’s (production assistants.)

I thanked Tom Hanks for helping to create such a wonderful set. I loved his response. He also sets the tone. And, his wife, the great actor Rita Wilson (who was one of the producers on this film) was also so kind, thoughtful and generous.

If You Become a Star

If you become a star, I have 2 requests.

  1. Would you give me a few days of work on your project?
  2. Please, treat others on the set the same way you want to be treated.

After watching this video please share your thoughts in the comments below.

If you ever get the opportunity, jump at the chance to work with either Tom Hanks or Rita Wilson. You will absolutely love the experience.

This mistake (that a lot of actors and models make) can ruin your commercial modeling career. This is the main reason many models can’t get work or find representation.

Prepare For Your Photo Session

When getting commercial photos taken, make sure you know exactly what shots are needed. Not being prepared before your photo shoot can ruin you
commercial modeling career.

Don’t do what I did when I first started in the industry 36 + years ago. I had no idea what to do for my first photo session. The photographer told me to make faces and that is what I did.

I was not prepared for this photo session. I had no idea what I should do. This picture was unusable for me

Being a Good Photographer Doesn’t Make You a Great Headshot Photographer

There are many good photographers taking headshots and commercial photos to help actors and models create a strong portfolio.

Good headshot photographers know how to take good pictures. But, that is not who you want to hire.
You want to work with a headshot photographer who knows how to take an effective headshot.

is a big difference between a photographer who knows how to take great photos and a photographer who know how to create an effective headshot.

An effective headshot will not only save you a lot of time and money, but it will also give you your best chance for success.

What is An Effective Headshot

An effective headshot is one that grabs the attention of agents, casting directors and other industry professionals. These photographers know how to find the essence of the actor and capture it in the photo. Those are the photographers you want to find.

How to Find a Great Headshot Photographer

8 Questions to Ask All Headshot Photographers Before Hiring One

You want to ask the photographer these 8 questions:

  1. How do you see me being cast
  2. Will you shoot on location or is everything done in the studio
  3. Would the photographer suggest any agents for you to contact
  4. What is the fee for the session and how many wardrobe changes will that include
  5. Is a makeup artist included in the headshot fee
  6. Will the photographer do any retouching and if so are there fees for that service
  7. Will the photographer look at the photos and give you his/her top choices
  8. Make sure you feel comfortable and can relax while working with the photographer
