How can actors join SAG-AFTRA and should they join the actors union?
There are pros and cons to being in SAG-AFTRA. There are many factors that go into deciding if joining the Union is right for you.

When you watch the video you will also learn what the Union can and can’t do for actors, the benefits and why joining the Union is not for everybody. And so much more.

There are 4 ways actors can join the actors Union.

1. Be a Member of a Sister Union

You can join SAG-AFTRA if you are a member of a sister union, such as Equity (the union for theater actors) . You have to have paid your union dues and have worked at least once in the past year.

2. Get Upgraded On a Union Set

Non-union extras are sometimes asked to do or say something during a shoot that gives them an upgrade. That means they go from being an extra to a day-player. Having this upgrade will allow you to join the Union if you desire.

3. Audition for a Union Project

Auditioning for a Union project and get cast, will allow you to join SAG-AFTRA.

4. This is How Many Actors Get Union Cards

The Union has negotiated with producers how many Union and non-Union extras are hired for each project. If the slot for Union extras has not been filled for the day, the casting director can invite you to be on that Union extra list, even if you are not a member yet.

When that happens, you will be paid the same and treated as a Union extra. If you are hired as a Union extra 3 times (does not have to be consecutive) and paid as a Union extra, then you can join.

Are you frustrated when not booking auditions? If so, try these 4 things.

Watch this video and learn how to feel better after feeling frustrated when you aren’t booking auditions. And, learn how to take much better care of yourself.

Acting Can Be Frustrating

Feeling Frustrated After Not Booking Auditions

It can be very frustrating for actors not to book after auditions. Some actors get angry and just want to give up and leave the acting industry. I understand and get that feeling.

Begin Feeling Better

The first thing that all actors need to do is feel great about just getting the audition. Most actors don’t realize that getting an acting audition is hard. There are so many headshots/resumes submitted to casting. Only a small percentage of actors are invited to audition.

Don’t Try to Book The Audition

It is essential that actors don’t try to book the audition. That puts too much pressure on us. What actors should do is enjoy themselves during their read. This can happen if they prepare well and give a smart and interesting read.

Actors Have Full Control Over Their Audition

Actors need to understand that we have full control over our audition.

We need to:

Prepare Well

Do our research (understand the type of project (comedy/drama) –  watch the show or if it’s a film, look at the directors previous work to have a better understanding of how to read your lines.

Study the Sides

If possible, memorize or at least have the sides near you to reference them if needed.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Wear clothing that makes sense for the character. Don’t wear a full costume and insult the casting director.

Use Good Auditioning Techniques

Make sure your eye-line changes if talking to multiple characters

The Audition

Never choose a generic choice to avoid making a “wrong” decision for your character.

Always make interesting and specific choices. We never know what people are looking for in a read. So, don’t play that game of trying to figure out what the casting director wants to see and read your audition with that concept in mind. It won’t work.

Take Your Time

Don’t rush making your audition, but always try and get the audition back to casting as soon as possible.

You Have No Control Over Who Gets Cast

Always remember, we have absolutely no control over who gets cast.

Once we upload the audition, it is out of our hands.

Do Something Nice For Yourself

You got the audition. Now is the time to celebrate that achievement. You worked hard at preparing, shooting and uploading the audition. You need to treat yourself to something nice. Give yourself something you really like. Whether it is buying ice cream or anything that will make you happy. You deserve to celebrate a little.

You did everything you needed to do, and now sit back and go onto the next
audition.

How do you know if you are a good actor? Are you sure you really know?

Questions For You

The first question I have for you is, do you know and how can you tell if you are a good actor?  What does being a good actor even mean?

Do you think you are a good actor because people tell you how great you are?

Do you believe you are a talented actor because you can do different dialects or cry on cue?

Does memorizing lines quickly make you a good actor?

Are you a good actor because you have the ability to make people laugh?

Actors Can’t Take A Test To See If They Are Good

We can’t take a test to know if we’re good

And, the biggest question I have for you is do you have to be a good actor have to have success?

I had an amazing experience doing stunt work on the Tom Hanks feature, A Man Called Otto. Here’s why.

After getting cast, the agent told me I was going to have a stunt double. Here is the short version (you will get all of the details in the video.)

My Stunt Double

My stunt double did the fall a few times, they “checked the gate” (making sure the glass in the camera was clean, so what was shot could be used) and then we moved onto another setup.

He did an incredible job. Later in the day, I was asked if I was comfortable doing the stunt myself. I immediately said yes. And, did the stunt (it was a fall) a few times.

Preparing For The Stunt

It was an amazing learning experience. The stunt coordinator and the other stunt artists on the set helped me tremendously. They taught me exactly what I needed to do and more importantly what not to do while doing the stunt.

Have You Done a Stunt

If you ever wondered what it’s really like being an actor on a set, then you will want to watch this video.

No Idea

Most people have no idea what actors go through in order to audition and actually book a role. You will see behind the scenes of an actor’s life, and
learn the realities of a working actor who:

1. auditions for a film
2. is put on hold/pinned
3. asked to hold dates
4. and then actually do the job.

About the Project

I auditioned for the Tom Hanks feature, A Man Called Otto in
February. After 4 shoot date schedule changes, I did not actually work
on the film until April.

It Was Worth the Wait

Actors need to learn to “go with the flow.” There are so many factors
that can change a shooting date. Anything from the weather
not being right for an outdoor shoot, to a cast member getting sick.

I Had a Wonderful Day

As you will see in the 2nd video, I had the pleasure of spending
the day and working with the wonderful Tom Hanks. Everything
you might have heard or read about him is true. He is such a kind,
friendly and special person. His wife, Rita Wilson, who produced the movie was also so nice and generous.

You will find that the atmosphere of a film set starts at the top. If the producer, director and stars are wonderful, that sets the tone
for everyone on the set. The great atmosphere transfers from the wardrobe department to the P.A.’s (Production Assistants) and everyone else connected with the project. If you ever get a chance to work with Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson or the director Marc Forster, jump at the opportunity.

Watch this video until the end and learn how to make a great acting sizzle reel by using these 7 essential tips.

Here are a few of the topics that Aaron covers in this sizzle reel video:

1. How to shoot your own material for your demo reel

2. How to get footage from existing projects that look great

3. Should you use a monologue or scene from a play in the sizzle reel

4. How long should the sizzle reel be

5. Is a slate needed in the reel And, so much more.

This is the first video on Aaron’s reel. Aaron is shown as “Michael” on the Netflix TV show “House of Cards.”

Labeling Your Videos

It is so important that people see the names of the projects in your reel. As you will watch in the video, I prefer having the name of the project appear in the bottom left corner as the scene begins.

How Long Should Your Reel Last?

There is no minimum to the length of your reel. If you only have
one piece to use and it lasts 15 seconds, that is fine. You have to start somewhere. You don’t want the sizzle reel to run longer than 1 minute.

Actors should always find ways for others to learn about them. It is not “who you know,” that is so important. Instead, it is “who knows you.”

A great way to have others learn about your acting skills, which can easily be done – at no cost is by adding your acting sizzle reel into your email signature.

In this video, you will learn step-by-step how to easily upload your demo (sizzle) reel into your email signature and allow others to view your work in every email you send.

3 Mistakes Actors Make at Callbacks – And How to Avoid Them
https://www.howtoactandmodel.com/3-mistakes-actors-make-at-callbacks-and-how-to-avoid-them/

Does Your Audition to Booking Percentage Matter

https://www.howtoactandmodel.com/does-your-audition-to-booking-percentage-matter/

There are 3 mistakes actors make at callbacks. Watch this video until the end and you will learn how to avoid them.

The first thing actors need to know is what exactly is a callback. This term refers to when a director, producer or others who are involved with deciding which actor is booked for the role, shows interest after watching someone’s audition and wants to see them again. So, they call the actor back for another read.

When you receive a callback, you are not booked for the job. Not even close to booking the job. You simply gave an audition that interests people and they want to see you again. So, don’t start telling people that you are hired or close to being booked. A number of people can be called back after the initial audition.

Mistake #1

The first mistake some actors make at the callback is to look different than they did at the initial audition. You have to remember, they liked your look and thought that it was right for the character. So, look the same way you did for the initial audition. I always wear the same clothes to the callback as I did for the audition.

Don’t make any drastic hair changes, or look different with makeup. Don’t comb your hair differently for the callback. Give them the same look that they liked and expect to see.

Mistake #2

The second mistake actors make at callbacks is to let their ego get in the way. Some actors like to show off during a callback. Their intension is to let those watching them that they are so talented and have such a wide range that they decide to read their lines in a completely different way than at the initial audition. DON’T DO THAT!! They brought you back because they liked how you read the lines. They found something interesting in your audition.

So, read it the same way you initially read. I understand that we are not computers and can’t simply read things the exact same way we initially read. But, you will remember things about your character, what you want your character to get out of the scene, are there any obstacles blocking you from your character’s needs, etc…

Do the best you can at reading things the same way.

Mistake #3

The third mistakes actors make is not understanding the reason for getting directions at the callback, which sometimes happens. It is easy for some actors to get upset or distracted when receiving an audition note, and think that the casting director or director didn’t like their read.

Keep in mind, you would not have been invited to a callback if they didn’t like your performance at the audition. The casting director and director know much more about the storyline than you. They can share this information with the actor and see what he or she does with this additional information.

You are able to make some great decisions with the initial sides that could be only a page or two. But others involved in the project know a lot more. So, don’t take their request as a criticism. It is just the opposite. View it as someone who is rooting for you and wants you to be great. That is why they are sharing the additional information with you.

Another reason for giving you a performance note is to make sure you have the ability to make changes in your performance. It is not unusual for a director to ask an actor on the set to make a slight adjustment to their performance. Even though they might have loved how you read at the callback and believe this would be the way they will have you read during the shoot, they just want to make sure you do have the skills to make changes if needed.

So, just like at the audition, your goal for the callback should not be booking the job. Instead, set your goal to simply have a good time. At the callback, you will have the opportunity to act and play. What a fun thing to do.

If you experienced a callback, let others know on the Channel page if something you did helped or hurt you during the callback.

When you go to your callback, read and look the same as the initial audition, and most importantly – have a good time.

Does your audition to booking percentage matter? Do you even know you’r booking to audition ratio?

Do you keep track of your audition to booking percentage?

And, does knowing the ratio of bookings from auditions give you information that will help your acting career?

Some actors keep a detailed list of not only how many bookings they get from auditions, but also have additional information in their spread sheet.

Actors have told me that they will also include the wardrobe they wore for the auditions, the type of character they auditioned for, the types of projects along with the dates they auditioned. Watch the video and see my thoughts on keeping track of the ratio of bookings from auditions.

Actors and models should watch out for these 2 acting scams. I had a chance to watch and experience 2 different companies that were trying to scam both actors and models.

For the first acting scam, I knew from the very start that they were illegitimate. But, I portrayed myself as a complete acting beginner with no experience. This allowed me to see exactly how they operated and ripped people off.

The second company was offering me a great modeling job. Fortunately, I know the modeling industry well and was able to ask the right questions to see they were running a scam.

Trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam.

There are so many people who truly want to enter the acting and modeling industry or take their career to the next level. Unfortunately, they don’t know the industry well enough to know what questions to ask to make sure the company is legitimate and not a scam.

When you watch this video to the end, you will learn how to spot the acting and modeling scams. And, what questions to ask and more importantly, what answers you should expect to receive.

In this video you will learn how I got cast in the HBO mini-series “We Own This City.”

I Initially Turned Down The Job

Auditioning for this project was a lot of fun. I read for the role of an attorney. Then, I got a call back. I read again and got some minor direction and read it again.

Why I Said No To The Job

A few days after my call back I received an email offering me the role. However, it was for a different attorney. Booking a role that you did not read for is not unusual at all.

I recently worked on a Netflix feature, and the audition had me reading for a part I was definitely not right for. The character’s age, and description were no where near my types. As it turned out, they just wanted to watch me act.

Aaron Marcus - excited about booking this acting job
Aaron Marcus – very happy about booking this job

I was very excited to be offered the role. The only problem was that the shoot date was happening while I was going to be on a family vacation.

It was a difficult decision, but I turned it down.

Funny How Things Can Work Out

While on vacation, I got an email from casting saying that they had to move the shoot date and asked if I was still interested and available. I was and accepted the job.

You can begin acting with these 3 steps. This will help you if you have little to no acting experience.

1. HeadShots

1. To begin working as an actor or model, you need to create an acting headshot. In the video you will learn some essential ingredients that go into creating an effective headshot. Agents and casting directors can see what roles are best for you from your headshot.

1. Resume

1.A. All actors need an acting resume. Even with no acting experience, you can create an acting resume that will grab the attention of agents, casting directors and other industry professionals.

You can read an article about headshots: What is the Perfect Headshot Size for an Actor or Actress?

https://www.howtoactandmodel.com/perfect-headshot-size-actor-actress/

You can watch this headshot video:

Should You Shoot Your Headshots Inside or Outside (Video)

2. Acting Class and Experience

2. The second step to begin acting is to take acting classes and get acting experience. Make sure the class teaches you what you need to know. Try auditing one class. Talk with others who have studied with the instructor.

Try getting acting jobs using online services that send you auditions. And, reach out to colleges, universities and community colleges to find the film classes where students shoot films for their class. This is a great way to get experience auditioning and hopefully working on films.

Market yourself to advertising agencies. Send a headshot and resume to the art or creative directors. You can search for advertising agencies online and visit: AAAA.org. The American Association of Advertising Agencies has a listing of advertising agencies throughout the United States.

3. Finding an Agent

3. Find an agent. You can find agents by doing online searches. In addition to searches, ask other actors in the industry who they recommend. Signatory agents are listed on the SAG-AFTRA website:
SAG-AFTRA.org. Signatory agents have signed contracts with the Union. There are many great agencies who have chosen not to be a signatory agent.

All actors need to know when turn down an acting job. There are a few situations when it is essential that actors turn down a job.

2 Times to Turn Down an Acting Job

1. If there is an acting job that has you promoting a company, organization, product or services that you don’t want to be associated with, then say no.

2. If you believe that accepting the acting job will hurt your acting career, then thank your agent, but don’t accept the project. Watch this video and see why I just turned down a great acting job, and why I have turned down other projects in the past.

Watch this video to learn how to simple it is to make this change.
