up hurting you? Please share it here with others.

There are 4 things you can do that will help you book the acting or modeling job.

I had a great opportunity to help other actors get booked for a few industrial films. I was
asked by some people whom I had done some films for in the past, if I could find
actors for a few upcoming projects. It was a great learning
experience and a wonderful opportunity to help other talent get work.

4 Things You Can Do to Help You Book the Job

Make life easy for the casting director and client.

  1. Send your audition back as soon as you can.

There were some people who waited a long time to get their auditions back. By the time I received them, the role was cast.

    2. Best Way to Send Your Head Shot and Resume

When you are sending your head shot and resume, email them as attachments. Some people
inserted them into their email. I could not easily copy and paste them and send them to the
client. And, don’t send your resume as a JPEG. It is hard to read. Always send a resume as
either a Word file or PDF. I prefer getting them as PDF’s, but either works.3. Make sure I can easily reach you.

On a number of resumes there was no contact information.
After sending a head shot and resume to the client, if they were interested in the actor, there
was not an easy way for me to get back in touch with them.
I would have to go through my trash file and find an email address. Always, at least have
your email address in your resume.

    4. Best Way to Label Your Information

Don’t send a head shot labeled as “new head shot_9_2019.” Always
place your name and maybe your phone number (or your agents) as the name of the file.
That makes it so easy for the client to know who they are looking at when viewing a head shot.

The same holds true for your resume. Label the file with your name.
It makes things so easy for everyone.I remembered the people who did not follow my simple directions.
I am not saying I would never contact them again if I thought they were right for a role,
but if I have a choice of a few people, I might push for the one who followed directions,
made things easy for me and one whom I think will be really easy to work with on a set.

There are a number of ways you can turn down an acting or modeling job.
But, there are some ways that work better than others.

Some actors and models turn down jobs because they don’t like
the script, the ad campaign, content, or because
it doesn’t pay enough. Those are all legitimate reasons not to
accept a booking. But, you want to be very careful with
how you turn it down.

Everyone Has An Ego

If you tell the writer that his or her script is written poorly,
how to fix the story line or tell someone
that it does not pay enough, they will remember you – but
in a negative way.

Although this is a big industry, in many ways it can be small.
Especially, with the use of social media. It is easy to get
slammed by someone who didn’t appreciate you telling
them that their work was not worthy of your consideration.

All of that might be true, but, there is no need to enter that
negative place.

Here is how to handle this situation

This is such a simple solution to a potentially hazardous situation.
Use these 4 words. “Sorry, I’m Not Available.”
That’s all. As with all acting, less is more. Don’t get into
why. You just are not available and leave it at that.

This is a great way to handle a potentially dangerous situation
that could get ugly.

If you have any suggestions for other ways to turn down a job,
please share it here.

There are 3 things all actors and models should do when work is slow.

Virtually all actors and models go through time periods when work is slow.
I was recently on a roll. Got cast in an ABC pilot, worked on a Steve Carell feature and then right after those jobs I had a 2-day commercial modeling booking.

Then I hit a two week stretch, where I had auditions, was sent up to the networks for consideration, but no immediate bookings. So, what did I do?

3 Things to Do When Work Slows Down

  1. 1. If you have been getting work on your own and don’t have representation, now is the time to begin searching for an agent. It is a great situation when actors and models continue to market themselves and search for work on their own, and have an agent helping them get auditions.

  2. Make Sure Your Materials Are Incredible

Head Shot

This is a great time to honestly look at your head shot, the most important marketing tool for an actor and even a commercial model. Is the head shot effective? Does it clearly allow people to see how you should be cast? Are you wearing anything (including jewelry) that stands out and grabs people’s attention? Do you have a plain background that will not take people’s eyes off of you?

Resume

Is your resume up to date? Do you have the correct contact information that will allow industry professionals to easily find you and see your work?

Is your educational information stated in a way that people will clearly understand what class you took? Some actors list things in a generic way that is not helpful to them. Having “acting class” on a resume, does not allow industry professionals to understand what you studied. For instance, “Acting for the Camera or TV Commercial Acting” will explain the class more clearly.

Do you have an accurate listing of your special skills? Think about what will help a casting director decide if you should be brought in for an audition. Can you drive a 5-speed? Have a valid passport? Are you a bartender, or proficient in sports, martial arts, speak foreign languages, ride a bike, etc…
If so, make sure they are stated on your resume.

Business Card

Once your head shots and resume’s are ready, another helpful tool is having an impressive business card. You never know when and where you will meet someone in the industry. You want them to easily remember and be able to contact you.

Have your head shot on your business card. This helps people remember you after meeting them. And, if they want to talk about you with others, they can show people what you look like.

Be careful with unusual fonts and colors that look cool, but make it difficult for others to easily read. List some of your credits, but make sure there is room for your contact information as well as social media links.

Marketing

Even if you have an agent, this is a great time to reach out to industry professionals whom you worked or have connected with in the past.

Staying in touch and letting people know what you have been doing is a great way of reminding people that you are around and available.

Send a still shot from one of your previous bookings in the note. And, have your head shot in the signature of your email.

I would avoid sending pictures as attachments. Many people are concerned about uploading a virus on their computer and are leery about opening up an unsolicited attachment.

Even if the industry professionals know you, sending them a note is a helpful way for them to remember to keep you in mind for their next project.

Classes

When there is not much work happening, now is a great time to take classes or private sessions. If you are not auditioning much, it is easy to get rusty so make sure you stay in audition shape.

Continue to stay sharp, get all of your materials together and let others know you are around and available.

These strategies have been very helpful to me.

I never kiss and tell, but in this situation I have to.

When you are working on a film, you never know about
the exact style, temperament or the way  a director will
be with actors.

The director on a film leads and sets the the tone of the project.

On a feature film the director is the boss.
I find that if a director is a bit tough
then those feelings filter its way down
to all those working under him/her.

If the director is nice and generous,
then that sets the tone for the entire set.

If you do this at an audition, I know you won’t book the job.

I recently recorded a home audition for a feature film.
As I always do, I read all of the information about the project.

What Should You Read Besides the Words in Your Sides?

You want to see who is the casting the project, the writers, producers and the director. If
I am not familiar with the director, look him/her up
on IMDB.com to see what other projects that person has
directed and watch clips of their work on You Tube.

This is a great way to be more familiar with the style of the director.

Something I Saw That Was Interesting

I noticed that the casting director was someone
whom I had met many many years ago. We spent time together
as guest speakers at a few events. She was very nice and I was
excited for her to get a chance to see my work.

Another Connection

There was also a local casting director who had submitted me
as her number 1 choice for a feature film a few years ago. I did
book that film.

During my slate, it would have been fun to say a few words to
both casting directors. “Wow, it has been a while since we last
hung out. I hope you are doing and feeling well.” Or, working
on that feature that you cast was wonderful, look forward
to working with you again.”

That is pure fantasy and it never should be done.

Don’t Ever Do That – It Will Kill Your
Audition – You Won’t Book the Job

This was a really fun job I had that ran in Maxim Magazine

This was a really fun job I had that ran in Maxim Magazine A different look for me!!!

If you want to send a note to the casting
director, then email him or her. Or, reach
out to them on social media. But, never
in your slate.

If you are making personal comments in your
slate, then it might make it seem that the
casting director is not recommending you for
the role just based on your audition. Perhaps,
it is due to a personal relationship. That can
put the casting director in an awkward position,
and you might not be recommended.

The same holds true during a live in-person audition.
Unless the casting director says something personal to
you before or after your read, treat them like
everyone else in the auditioning room.

For this particular audition, I did not say anything in my
slate. I just found out that I am being sent to
the director and producers for consideration for the role.

I worked on a feature film and
had some lines taken from me
and given to other people.

It is Easy to Feel Crushed

Having lines taken away can feel awful.
Don’t fall for the trap and begin feeling paranoid and have self doubts
about your self worth and skills as an actor.

You might think:

Did the director hate my work?
Was it a personality issue?
Did I say something that upset one of the stars?
Are they going to fire me?

Don’t Sweat It

Lines can be taken from actors for many reasons.

There were two reasons why
some of my lines were given to other people.

1. One of the other actors needed to have more contact
with the stars of the project. The director decided to
give one of my lines to him. This allowed him to
interact more with the stars which gave him
more reason to connect with them later.

That made sense to me.

2. The assistant to the producer was given another
line of mine. Not happy about it, but I completely
understand. He wanted to reward her with screen time,
get a nice paycheck for the day and even allow her
to get residuals after the film is released.

So, having a few lines taken from me had absolutely nothing
to do with me, my performance or me as a human.

These and most on-set decisions are simply business choices.
Nothing personal.

It is really important to always keep this in mind for many
situations in our industry. Including getting or not getting
booked for a role. Nothing personal, just business decisions.

Let me and others know if you ever experienced anything like
this on a set by sharing your thoughts below.

Some actors make a huge mistake on their acting resume.

If you haven’t done many acting jobs then list the classes
you have taken on your resume as well as the instructor/school.

This information will make the difference between getting
a chance to audition or not being considered.

I was recently asked to help find actors for a training film. The talent
needed to be teleprompter proficient.

After looking at everyone’s head shot to make sure they looked
right for the role, I read their resume.

Your Resume

There were some actors who did not have much experience.
That was fine with me. Next, I looked at their training.

If they took classes with teachers or institutions I respected,
then I invited them to audition.

If not, I didn’t want to take a chance of having them send the client
a bad audition. It would be a poor reflection on me. So,
they were not invited to audition.

Other Resume Mistakes

Make sure your special skills are accurate. If you are
teleprompter proficient, make sure it is listed.

Be very clear with your special skills listings.

Don’t just list: Acting Class.
Make it specific. Let people know what type of class.
Was it an Improv, acting for the camera, acting for film
and television, acting for TV commercial class?

That holds true for other special skills. Don’t just list
dance as a special skill. Let people know specifically, what type
of dance. Hip hop, ballet, jazz, tango, etc… The more specific
the more helpful the information will be to casting directors.

Doing this also let’s them know you really understand the skill you
listed.

I know this is crazy, but I love doing this.

As we prepare for an audition, whether it be film, TV or even a commercial, we should always try and memorize the sides.

Whether you have the sides memorized or are just really familiar with them, always have the sides in your hand during the audition. That way if you happen to go blank and forget some words or lines,
you can quickly glance at the sides to keep your audition going.

Keep The Sides Even After the Audition

After my audition, even if I did not book the job, I will work
on memorizing the sides so that they are scene ready.

I know that seems a bit crazy if I did not book the job. But,
to me, this gives me the opportunity to continue exercising
my brain. There could be long stretches of not booking a
job, and not fully memorizing the sides.

So, this is a great way to keep your brain sharp and always ready for
when you actually have to memorize your lines for a job

Now I Throw Away the Sides

After I finish memorizing the sides, then I toss them out.
I have no need to hold onto projects I did not book.

You should never do this. The reason why I know is because I did!!

I had an audition for a TV show in New York. I decided to take it easy
and not drive, so I took a bus. This allowed me to study my sides
and even sleep a little before the audition.

I had been traveling a lot so instead of waking up super early and
arrive in New York 2.5 hours before my audition, I decided to take
the next bus and arrive one hour early.

When you watch the video you will see what happened and what
you definitely do not want to do for future auditions.

Please, don’t ever say this to another actor.

I was working on a feature film.
The director decided to give the 6 principal
actors one additional line that he quickly wrote.

They were said rapid fire to another principal actor.

One of the extras walked over to one of the principals and
told her that she did not say the exact words the director gave her.

Don’t Ever Do This

I was very concerned that the actor
would lose her concentration and
and feel uncomfortable.

I talked with the extra in a nice way
(although I was angry) and said,
“If the director does not like her
line read then he will talk with the
actor.”

Never ever, ever ever, ever tell an actor
how to do his or her lines.

Another Incident

That reminds me about an incident
at the beginning of my career. I was
working on a scene in a film, and the
other actor told me that I should try
reading my lines another way.

I made it very clear that my read is
my choice and if there is an issue,
I want the director to direct me, not
another actor.

So, please, unless an actor is asking for help,
let the actor do his or her job as well as the
director.

It is really hard to get cast in a TV pilot.
Just getting the audition itself is difficult.

So many people are submitted for each role.
Then to and actually book it, wow, it feels amazing.

I was very excited to get the great news.

I am going to share some additional
information of behind the scenes and
realities of being in a pilot in this second video.

I signed an NDA (non disclosure agreement)
so I can’t share specifics, about the project,
but I will give you hints, suggestions and tips
that will help you when you work on a pilot –
or a TV show in general.

Update

As of today, I have not heard
if the pilot has been picked up.

While giving workshops in South Africa, I got an email telling me I was booked for an ABC pilot.

It is very hard to get these types of bookings. Casting directors can receive anywhere between 500-1500 head shot/resume submissions per role.

Then, only a small percentage of those actors get the chance to audition.

After auditioning, (in my case), the L.A. casting director, N.Y. casting director and the Atlanta casting director each sent their top choice to the Network for final decisions. This time, I got the booking.

This will be the first of a series of videos that give you a behind the scenes look of working on a pilot.

Since I signed an NDA (non disclosure agreement) I can’t give any specific details of the show, but you will learn what takes place on the set.

Feel free to share this video throughout your social media pages. Help your fellow actors and models learn more about the industry.

There is 1 trick that can get you more auditions. Many people have no idea

that having a special slate on Actors Access can greatly increase your chances

of getting an audition.

All actors and models need to learn how to solve problems
that can occur after a booking.

Here is How They Get You

I made a decision to accept a small paying acting job
that was shooting more than 7 hours away from my home.

Actors Pension

Some actors would never have accepted this booking, and I
completely understand why they would turn it down.

As a Union actor, I never want miss earning
the minimum needed to add to my pension.  So, I accept
lot’s of jobs that others might turn down.

I also know that when I am on a set, I will meet interesting people
and learn new things.

I also find that work brings in more work.

After traveling many hours, I woke up early the next morning
to get ready to head to the set.

Check Your Wardrobe the Night Before a Shoot

As I was pulling the wardrobe out of my garment bag, I noticed
that my clothes were wet. I drove through a storm and some
water must have leaked into my trunk.

I did not have time to dry the clothes, so I carried them to my car.
Unfortunately, I dropped my shirt in a puddle, so now it was soaked.

To deal with this, I placed my shirt on the dashboard of the car, pointed
the vents toward my shirt and blew out a lot of hot air.

It worked pretty well.

Surprise

Aaron Marcus get's blown up in this commercial modeling job

I assumed the shoot was taking
place in the city where the casting
director was located. That is where
I booked my hotel room.

The night before the shoot I got an email showing
that the set was IN ANOTHER STATE!!

I freaked out for a moment. I was thinking
that I might have to get up at midnight and
start driving again.

As it turned out, the location was in another
state, but only an hour away.

I was able to sleep well

In the video

you will watch and learn about other
things that made things a bit complicated.

But, what I have learned over the past 30 + years
as a full-time actor and commercial model, is that
we have to learn how to deal with tough situations.

The difficult surprises will always be there waiting to haunt us. But, I
always think, “OK, this is difficult, and how am I
going to solve the problem.”

As it turned out, the shoot was wonderful,
and I did meet some really interesting and
nice people.

Here is 1 thing you can do to help get more acting or modeling jobs.

You Have 2 Choices

You could be lazy, sleep all day
and wait for the phone to ring.

Or, be pro-active – and get excited because
you got a job on your own

Here is What You Can Do To Get More Work

I had a few weeks in January when things
were pretty slow. Actually, in the past, after
Thanksgiving work always slowed down until the end of January.

That is not always the case anymore. I can’t predict things like I could before.

Instead of waiting for phone calls, I decided to take control and and market myself.

I reached out to:

  • agents whom I hadn’t spoken to for a while
  • photographers whom I worked with in the past
  • casting directors whom I had read with
  • art and creative directors who had cast me for radio/TV spots or commercial modeling ads
  • and other industry contacts

It was not a coincidence that 2 days after sending out a few notices,
a photographer called and asked me if I was available for a shoot.

Here is the important take away

Send a short cover letter and include either a head shot
and or some still shots from bookings. (Don’t send attachments)

Let the person know about any recent (or in the past) jobs you had.

Make sure your contact information is shown

Reminding people that you are still around, is a great
way for them to remember that they should keep you in mind
for future projects.

Share with others ways that you have gotten yourself work.

I had a wonderful time yesterday working on an incredible photo shoot in New York.
This will be an international project. Can’t wait to see the final ad.

When On the Set

I always ask the photographer what is happening in the ad. What
emotions and expressions are needed from my character.

I view all commercial modeling shoots as acting jobs, except there are no lines to memorize.

I loved playing the “Rock Grunge Guitarist” for Molson Beer.

For yesterday’s job, the photographer gave me
specific information about what my character
needed to feel and show.

We shot for a short time and then the creative director
from the advertising agency gave me a different scenario.

Now I have to switch gears and show other
types of emotions.

I told  the creative director that the photographer was asking
for something else. He said, don’t worry, just
follow his suggestions.

Who should I listen to?

I decided to listen to the creative director
from the ad agency.

After our next break, the photographer asked
me what I was doing. He said my looks and
emotions were all wrong. What happened?

I told him that the creative director asked me
to show different types of emotions. If needed
I can show both looks.

Then I asked if he would talk with the creative director
and just let me know what I need to present to the camera.

Here is How They Get You
When you communicate well
good things happen.

The photographer
talked to me after his meeting –
apologized and asked me to follow
the creative director’s ideas.

He had spoken with the client and they
changed the concept.

This is not the time to have a fit and begin
yelling at people on the set, saying “Why can’t
people make up their minds and tell
me you need.”

What works better is to simply
have a calm conversation and things
will get resolved.

No one is born into this world with a great resume.

If you are just getting started, or if you have not
had the opportunities to book impressive projects,
here are 2 important things you can do to make
your resume more attractive to industry insiders.

Don’t Lie on Your Resume

That seems like a silly statement, but there are actors
who pad their resume with plays or even film/TV
projects they never worked on. They think no one
will find out that they lied.

Don’t do this. It is not good to run your acting
or modeling business based on lies. And, people
can find out that you are not honest. Once that
happens, people will not want to work with you.

Read My Book (How to Become a Successful Actor and Model)
you will find a page devoted to how to create a great resume –
even with little to no experience.

Add Your Head Shot to Your Resume

It is a smart idea and a great marketing strategy to
to have people see your face as many times as possible.

If you include your head shot (the same photo that is on the
other side of the page or a different looking head shot) to
the upper right hand corner of your resume, people will
be able to see your face again.

This is a good way to continue to have your image
branded into their brain as they view your resume.

Here is a sample of the top section of my resume.

Being honest and adding your photo are 2 important things
you can do to make your resume stronger.

If there are any tips you can offer others that make your
resume look and sound good, please share them here
with others.

This morning I had an on camera narration job where I had to use a teleprompter.

I love these bookings. Sometimes they are very educational, fun and all of my lines are on a teleprompter.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you don’t have to do a lot of preparation for the job because there are no lines to memorize. There is a lot of work that needs to be done before shooting.

Just so you know, the on camera narrator is kind of like the “spokesperson.” The talent talking about what is going to happen, or giving out information etc… Sometimes, there are other actors who are in scenes that have been set up and explained by the narrator.

Today I talked about an investment plan. Then I introduced the person who created the program.

Here are a few tips that will help you have a successful day as an on camera narrator.

Talk with the person who is scrolling your lines on the tele – prompter. I always ask the person to follow me. Sometimes, they try and get you to talk at their pace. Don’t do that. You need to develop your rhythm and let your words flow in the way you practiced and feels right.

And, when possible, run through all of your lines on the prompter at least once before shooting. Seeing the words on the monitor will look very different than the words on your script. The amount of words on each line will be different. It is a small but important adjustment to make.

If there is a word that is hard to pronounce, ask the person running the prompter to type in the word phonetically so you can easily pronounce it properly.

Let me and others know what tips you can share to help others when using a teleprompter.
