I have given many private online mentoring sessions and the question that I frequently get is “Should they write my own monologue?”

It is true, you want and need to be able to connect with your monologue, so writing from you personal experiences can be extremely helpful.

You Probably Should Not Write Your Monologue

Here is the problem that happens when most actors write their own monologue. You need to be a great writer. Actors need to understand how to carefully craft the perfect words into a 1 or possibly 2 minute piece. There has to be an interesting story, emotional change in the character to show a shift in the character and an ending that keeps those watching wanting more.

Your monologue has to be truthful

An actors monologue has to be truthful. I don’t mean the facts are accurate, but that it sounds real. The situation is believable. I once heard an 11 year old do a monologue about how her husband left her with 2 kids in the house. This was so silly. No one would even pay attention to her performance. The situation was so unbelievable that it was impossible to watch her performance. This was an incredibly poor choice of material.

Find a monologue that is right for you. One that allows you to feel, and relate to the character.

Don’t Pick a Monologue Taken From a Popular Film or TV Show

When an actor chooses a piece that was performed by a well known actor, everyone will compare your performance. Just like with singing, it can be very tricky to choose a song that was recorded by a famous singer. Unless, you bringing something very new and different to the performance, it is better to find another monologue.

Find one that is less well known. This will allow you to bring more of your personality and ideas to the character without being compared to anyone else.

Last Words

Find a monologue that is age appropriate, one that makes sense for you to read, and most importantly, don’t copy any other actor’s read. Make it your own.

I just auditioned for a great TV show that is a comedy. I knew that the 1 trick for giving my best read was not to be funny.

That was such a fun job to shoot. It was an editorial for an article about humor.

What is Happening in the Scene

In the first scene, I am talking to one of the stars of the show. He is saying absolutely hilarious and outrageous things to me. I had two choices,

1. I could respond to him in a crazy way that corresponded to the insane
things he was saying.

2. I could answer him as if we are having a normal conversation.

You have to understand. When actors are working together in a scene,
it is a group effort. We are all on the same team with one in common goal.
MAKE THE SCENE WORK

Leave your ego back in your trailer. On the set it is not trying to out do someone else, it is to be a team player and do whatever is necessary to
turn your scene into a memorable one, and a scene that helps the project.

I Played My Scene as Straight as Possible

In order for my scene partner to be unbelievably funny,
I needed to talk with him as if we were having a normal conversation.
That allowed the other actor to stand out even more, which really made
the scene incredibly funny.

The Actual Scene

I never think I am going to book the job. I truly believe this for every audition I attend. It’s not that I think I’m a horrible actor, I just realize that there are so many factors that go into booking a job that has little to do with performance.

My Audition Goals

My number 1 goal for every audition is to have a fun time. I never try and book the job.

When I watch the show, I will be very interested to see how the actor plays the scene.

3 Things to Do When Work is Slow
https://www.howtoactandmodel.com/3-things-to-do-when-work-is-slow/

On howtoactandmodel.com, I receive many questions from beginning and even experienced actors and models. There is one question that I see a lot. Perhaps I should not have responded to this actors question this way.

Did I say the wrong thing to this actor?

This actor was interested in signing up to have an online mentoring session with me. I love these acting, modeling and industry sessions. It allows me to help people from around the world learn how to have success.

What the Actor Asked Me

One of the first questions the actor asked was how long will it take until she books her first job. The second questions was how much she will make in both acting and modeling jobs.

This is What I told Her

I know it would have been good for business if I told her that she will begin booking acting and modeling jobs very soon. And, that she will make a lot of money by studying with me.

But, that is not what I believe. And I would never run my mentoring business in a dishonest way.

The truth is that there are no guarantees in the acting or modeling industry.
I have been very fortunate and have been booked over 1,250 times in my career, but there is no guarantee that I will book another job.

What I did say to the actor is that I can guarantee to give you the information you need to give yourself your best chance for success.

But, your success is partially based on how hard you work, how willing your are to practice and put into practice what I teach you so that you become really good at your craft. And, that you work hard at making yourself known to the industry.

Don’t be a lazy actor or model and just wait for things to happen

If anyone tells you that they can guarantee you success as an actor or a model – run. There is no way anyone can promise you anything with any certainty.

Some actors will wear anything to an audition. They don’t want to look desperate, so, instead of looking the part, they wear whatever they want for the audition.

They think that the casting director knows what a doctor looks like, and they only want to see if you can act.

I am not necessarily thinking of a doctor when I see this wardrobe.

Another philosophy is to dress the part. This allows the casting director
and director to immediately think of you in that role.

Looking the part can also be helpful if you are reading for a TV commercial. Even if the casting director, art and creative director from the ad agency
and the director can imagine you as a doctor – even with a Hawaiian shirt on, perhaps the client might not have that type of imagination.

The most important thing is not to insult a casting director. Don’t over dress.

When you watch this video, you will learn more about what you should and never wear to an audition.

If you had an experiences where your wardrobe helped or hurt you getting booked, leave a comment below.

I recently had an audition for a long running TV show. The casting director asked me to make a change to my read in one of the scenes. What quickly went through my mind was, should I change the way I believe the character should react, and continue to read in the way I think is right? Or, should I do what the casting director asked?

Not doing what you believe is right can be a tough decision to make

I spent a lot of time working on and giving my character life. I created a really interesting concept that was different than what would typically be done for this role.

Watch this video to hear/see exactly what I did for my audition.

After being asked to make a change I quickly decided to take the casting director’s suggestion and incorporate it into my idea. This way, I gave him
what he wanted, and made an adjustment to my read that still made things a little different then a typical read.

Sometimes a casting director might really like your interpretation and still ask you to make changes. This could be done just to see if you have the acting skills to listen and adjust to his or her direction.

The casting director has read the entire script. If you are reading for a smaller role, you will normally be sent the sides. A short portion of the script which is read during the audition.

You won’t know nearly as much about what happened before and after your scene takes place then the casting director.

I highly recommend you listen and make the requested changes. If you really believe it does not work then talk with the casting director. But, I suggest you at least give his or her idea a try. If you feel so strongly about your concept, then ask if you can try it again your way.

The acting and modeling industry can be frustrating at times. If you are not really savvy, there are ways you react to situations that can blow up your career – in a bad way.

Don’t trash your career

I had a situation with an audition and call back for a TV show that was very frustrating. I felt angry about having to jump through so many hoops. It seemed like I was being asked to do things for crazy reason.

When you watch this video you will learn what I had to do and why it was so hard for me. Boy, I am really glad that I decided not to say what I was initially feeling. Took a lot of deep breaths, went out for a run and calmed myself down.
Later in the day, I decided to do what the director requested and I wound up booking the job.

Tell me if there was one thing in this video that was similar to an experience you had.

If something is making you feel angry or frustrated and you just want to lash out, make sure you calm down and get your mind in a clear place.
I am not saying that you should never speak your mind, but there are ways
that you can get your point across in a very productive way.

I was asked to find actors for a company that was shooting a video. I noticed 3 things that some actors did that hurt their chances of booking the job. I will share them with you in this video.

Don’t get locked out of a potential booking by doing the wrong things

3 Things That Will Help You Book Your Audition

  1. If you are shooting a home audition, send it back to the casting director as quickly as possible. If you wait until the actual deadline, the project might have already been cast.
  2. Properly label your video file. A number of people did not follow my directions. Instead of writing their First Name_Last Name and Phone Number, they just wrote audition, or the date. Since people did not slate, there was not an easy way for me to identify them.
  3. Make sure you have contact information on your resume. Some people had their name and credits, but no way for me to easily get back in touch with them. If you are working with an agent who does not want your personal information on a resume out of concern that you will deal directly with the client, then at least have your agent’s information.

Leave a comment below to let me and others know if you have ever done one of these 3 things. Or, if there are things that you do that helps your chances of booking a job.

What does it mean when an actor gets pinned?

I was invited to audition for a TV show by the same casting director who had me read for the recurring role I booked on the Netflix show House of Cards.

It is Not a Fluke

You are brought back to read for other projects because the casting director liked your audition, whether you booked or not. In many ways, booking the job is irrelevant. What is crucial is being remembered in a positive way by the casting director.

Casting directors want to bring back actors that will make them look good when submitting auditions to the decision makers. It also makes their job easier when they can count on taping actors who they know will give strong reads.

I was happy with my audition

I walked out feeling good about the read and the choices I made during my audition. Then I began my journey back home. A few hours later I received an email from my agent saying that I was pinned, and was given an updated list of dates when the scene could be shot. I told my agent about a few possible conflicts.

Not Sure What Does Being Pinned Means?

Being pinned for a TV show means that the casting director really liked your audition as did production, and they believe you are right for the role.
And, they want you to hold the shooting dates for them.

While watching this video, you will learn how you should never turn down a definite booking just because you are pinned. And, you will learn what to do if you are in that fortunate situation.

The next major casting decision will come from the network folks. All of the actor’s who were pinned will have their auditions viewed by network people. Then a final decision is made.

A few days after being pinned, I was unpinned. Meaning, they decided to cast someone else. It is always disappointing getting unpinned for jobs I wanted to work on.

I never think I am going to book any job I audition for. I also know that getting pinned only means that they are interested in you. You are still far far away from a booking. But, it always feels great to know that the casting director really liked my audition as did I.

Even though I did not book this time, The casting director could bring me back to read for another character. My recurring role on House of Cards came after my 15th audition for the show.

Being Pinned is Like Getting Asked Out On Date – Feels Good, But it Doesn’t Mean the Date Will Go Well

It is nice when someone likes your audition and is considering you. But, chances are you still won’t book the job. Enjoy the fact that casting liked your read, but don’t start planning your life around the shoot dates.

I had a horrible experience on my way to an audition and a booking on the same day.

I decided to take the bus to New York for an afternoon modeling job. It is not how I like to travel, but it is convenient and easier than driving in traffic.

This was what I was feeling

The day before my shoot, I got an email about auditioning for a new episodic TV show for the same day as my modeling job. I had already booked a bus getting me into New York at 11:30 which was 2 hours before my print job.

The agent told me my audition time was 10:00. I told the agent my situation and asked if I could read later in the morning. The casting director (whom I have worked with before) rescheduled me for a 12:20 audition. That was very nice of her to accommodate my schedule.

I knew I was cutting things a little closer than I prefer, but the audition was only 8 blocks from where the bus dropped me off. That gave me 50 minutes to arrive for the audition.

I was a little nervous about the timing, but was hoping for the best.

Things Did Not Start Off Well

The bus arrived around 35 minutes late. Since we left around 8:45, I figured we would miss rush hour traffic and give me plenty of time for the audition.

Things Got Worse

The traffic was horrible. According to my phone, we would not arrive in N.Y. until 12:00. I was still thinking that I could make it to the audition in time. I kept looking at my watch and saw that I would never arrive at the casting directors office by 12:20. We did not get out of the Lincoln Tunnel until 12:00.

What Should You Do When Running Late

If you are ever in a situation where you are running late, always contact your agent. Never call the client (if it is a commercial job) or the casting director. Let your agent handle things. I originally told her it looked like I was going to be 15 minutes late. Then I sent her an update when I realized it was going to be much later than 15 minutes.

I Felt So Embarrassed

I put myself in the casting director’s shoes and know she
has a tight schedule. When people show up late, it can make
things much harder to keep auditions happening on time.

I was also concerned that since I was traveling from out of state
I did not want her to wonder if I could be trusted to show up on
time for the job (if I booked it.)

As it turned out, there were still people ahead of me, so I got a chance to
take a few minutes, get myself in the right frame of mind and have
fun with my audition.

The casting director did not bring anything up about me being late,
and I did not apologize. I was hoping that maybe her assistants were
dealing with my schedule and not the casting director.

As things turned out, I did the audition and made it in time for my
modeling job.

Good News Bad News

About 3 hours after my auditioned, my agent emailed me saying that I had been pinned. That meant that the casting director and production folks liked my audition and were asking me to save the shoot dates.

Yesterday, got another email from the agent saying that the network decided to go with someone else.

Never feels good to lose a potential job, but the good news is that this is a
well known casting director who liked my work and hopefully, I will be
brought back to read for another role for this role or other projects.

If you have ever run into tough situations involving auditions or jobs, feel free to share it here so we can all learn from your experiences.

For an actor and commercial model there is no place better to live than in New York. New York is the number one city in the United States for commercial print work. And, there were more than 70 films and TV shows shot there in October, 2019.

So, why would anyone wanting to work in the acting or modeling industry not want to live in New York.

Some talent might be scared to live in N.Y.

There are many reasons. Some people:

  1. Might not feel comfortable in such a large city. It can feel overwhelming and some people love a small city type of life.
  2. Are not in a position to move. They already have a job/family and uprooting from their home is just too much.
  3. Are simply afraid. It can feel good to be a big fish in a small pond and they don’t want that situation to change.
  4. My reason for not moving to New York

My work (acting and modeling) is very very important to me. But, it is not the most important thing in my life. My family takes a higher priority. When I started having children, I wanted them to live in an environment, where they could easily walk around a neighborhood, live in a house that has land to play on and live a slower paced lifestyle.

So, I decided that my and my families life was more important than work. There is no doubt that I do not get the same opportunities for work due to living outside of New York. And, I have a long commute to get there. But, this was a great decision for me.

I am not saying in any way that this is what others should do, I am simply sharing with you why I made this decision.

No regrets at all. And, I have been living a good life for over 33 years.

A few weeks ago I received an email from a promotional company. They normally hire people to hand out items in stores or bring people to a booth at a convention. This one was different, and you won’t believe the booking I had.

I Did a Similar Job Many Years Ago

Many years ago I was hired to be a live model for a company that created a new and sophisticated heart monitor. All I did for 2 days was lie down and have connections placed on my heart, so people could see how amazing this new machine worked. That was a great job.

This acting job was similar. A company created a new transfusion machine for people whose kidneys were failing. I spent 3 hours each day (for 3 days) laying down in a special chair that people use when having a transfusion, and that was all I did.

The connections were just taped to my arm. I did not have any IV’s placed into my skin. The tubes had red paint that looked like blood and the machine was moving as if I was on dialysis.

There were many things I could have done. People on dialysis will sometimes read, or spend time on their phone. I had a different idea.

They hired me because they believed (and they were right) that a real person would bring many more people to the booth than just having a plastic model. As people came by, the sales people would begin asking questions, get contact information for follow up calls and talk about the product.

I Wanted to Be a Team Player

I thought that if I had my eyes closed, people might think I was actually having dialysis, or perhaps if they far enough away, they might not know if I was real. My job was to help the sales people. So, I did not interact with people, made sure no one knew for sure if I was real until they walked up next to me.
If they asked if I was actually having a treatment, I would let them know that I was not. Or, when a few people touched my arm to see if I was a human, I did open my eyes (and scared a number of people,) but otherwise, I just kept my eyes closed for 3 hours at a stretch.

It Felt Like a Long Meditation

It was so nice to just close my eyes, sometime listen to what was being said by the sales people or just take in the sounds of the event. I could hear music from other booths, other people talking to each other or sometimes
I would just allow myself to take in the energy of this huge gathering. And, sometimes I would sleep!

It was a wonderful experience for so many reasons. And, the job paid well.

The other great part was that everyone from the company was so nice. They would check in on me to make sure I was comfortable, and I got a chance to learn a lot more about dialysis and how it truly keeps so many people alive.

I also learned that for any job, we are all team players. On a film, there are hundreds of people on the team. Each person has an important job, and our goal is to make the project better. Even if it means sleeping on the job!

You never know what types of experiences you might have in this industry. This was a great one.

I recently had a few companies ask me to help them find actors and models for various projects. I ran into a devastating situation and I want to make sure it does not happen to you.

Things can get so frustrating at times

Tried Reaching Out

Actors and models on my mailing list who were right for the roles, received audition emails. A few actors I knew never responded. This surprised me, so I called to find out why. They told me that they never received my email .

This is a time when it was fun blowing up and feeling confused

Shocked

This information shocked and confused me. I never received an email stating that the email bounced. To do a quick test, while I was on the phone with the actor, I sent her an email. It still never arrived.

I spent hours contacting my email provider, web site host and the company used to send out emails. All confirmed the emails were sent and arrived properly.

Fixing the Problem

Here is what happened. The only people not receiving my emails had a Comcast account. A Comcast, technician explained the emails were not delivered because my address was not white listed. So, they blocked my emails from reaching the actors and models.

Then I spent a lot of time with Comcast. Here is what I found.

The technician said the signature in my email might have caused the problem. A photo and links in the signature could cause issues. I have a number of links below my head shot such as:
IMDB
Facebook
Instagram
Mentoring Program
LinkedIn
Twitter

I filled out online forms, explained that I only send emails to those who request them and did a few tests with Comcast technicians. Finally, I got white listed again. Now my emails are reaching everyone who uses Comcast.

So, if you have a signature in your email, (which you need) you might want to test it out with a number of different people who use various email services to make sure they are being reached properly.

I was recently at an audition for a TV commercial and had an important question for the casting director.

This would not be a good time or way to ask a question!!!

Actors should know that casting directors are on our side. They want us to be great and give wonderful auditions. Even if they don’t care about us (which is rare), it is in the casting director’s best interest to supply the director with great auditions. It makes the casting director look good if he or she is supplying fantastic choices for each role.

When you watch this video, you will learn what questions are essential, and what you should never ask during an audition.

P.S. I am currently on right of first refusal for this audition. Should find out in a few days if I booked the job.

When an agent tells you that you are the clients first choice, what does that really mean?

At first, it is exciting news.

But then you will learn that even if that
information is true, you can still be very
far away from booking the job.

It is not that an agent is lying, perhaps that is what the client
told the agent. But things change.

I was once the number 1 choice for a really big print campaign.
I had worked with the production company before and we all got
along really well. I was very excited to hear I was the client’s
1st choice. I assumed I had this great booking.

At some point, the character that they needed aged about 10 years,
and I guess I was no longer number 1 – or even in the running.

So, even though it might feel great and you get excited about the good
news, always remember that until you are booked (and even then sometimes things change), don’t get too excited until you do the job
and get paid.

To be honest with you, I had someone really disappoint me recently.

Frustrated About Not Booking the Job

As you probably know, I offer private online mentoring programs

This has allowed me to help people break into or advance their acting and modeling career. By working online, I am able to help folks from literally around the world. This is something I love doing so much, that I set aside 5 days each month to mentor people.

A woman wanted to talk with me because an agent contacted her about representation. She had some concerns and wanted to discuss a number things with me.
She wanted a 2-hour session but could’t pay me until the end of the week. I knew that she needed to respond to the agent immediately, so I told her, I would have the session that day. I mentioned that I was doing this on good faith. The only thing I asked was that she keep her promise and make the payment without me having to remind her.

The payment date came and went. I sent an email reminder. No word. Another week went by, no word. It has been a month now and never heard back from the woman.

At first, I was angry. Not from losing the money, but this person out and out lied to me. I spent a lot of time, sent her important industry links that really helped her, and she completely ripped me off.

Then, I went through another phase of just losing faith. I thought, how could someone look me in the eye and (we were sharing cameras and monitors during out session) and just lie. I started feeling that I was losing faith in people.

That phase did not last long. I then started thinking that she must be in a very bad place, if this is how she needs to run her life. I would have been fine if she told me that she was having financial problems and needed to make small payments over a long period of time. That would have been fine. Just to show me good faith and that she would keep her word.

But, ultimately, I viewed it as if I were a store owner. Most of my customers are nice and decent people. There are a few who will shop lift.

I came away deciding not to change the way I deal with the world. I always allow actors and models to pay on a monthly basis if paying the full amount at once is any issue. That holds true for private online mentoring or my in-person workshops.

If I stayed angry, bitter and just felt that the world was an untrustworthy place, filled with cheats and dishonest people, then I would have lost a lot
more than just some money. I would have lost part of my soul that truly believes that there are so many great people in this world – doing amazing things for others.

If you run into a bad situation in the acting or modeling industry, feel, whatever it is you feel. But, really think about the experience and see if you can understand what happened and hopefully walk away at some point without keeping the anger and bitterness inside you.

If you have experienced something like this in your life, feel free to share it here with others.

It is essential that both actors and models keep great records. Knowing what jobs you have done can help make you a lot of money.

I find that especially for pharmaceutical and insurance ads, clients need to know what other jobs you have done for companies in those industries. They need to know that you do not have any conflicts currently running.

This is why it is essential that after every job you make a list with this information.
1. Date/Year
2. Type of job (acting, modeling , etc…)
3. The agency you booked with, client, people you met on the set (director,
photographer, art director, makeup artist etc…)
4. What the job was for. If for a pharmaceutical, list the name of the product
and for what type of ailment or disease.
5. How long will the ad run. 1 year, 2 years, in perpetuity.

Always bring this information with you to every go-see. I have it on my phone – at least the name of the product/type of product, date shot and time of usage. This allows me to answer all of the questions about potential conflicts.

I know this sounds crazy, but folding laundry will help you
memorize your lines.

There are many memorization techniques. Every actor has his/her own
style that works best.

But, even after going  over your lines many times, it is crucial that you do a test to see
if you really have your words down, by saying them while performing a task.

It could be sweeping the floor,

folding laundry or anything that forces you to use your brain for
something else while saying your lines.

Whether you are thinking about dyeing your hair or even if that does not effect you,
you want to watch this video.

There is so much uncertainty about whether having grey/white hair will help ones
acting or modeling career. That is a complicated question to answer.

For years I knew that my younger looking face did not match my natural grey hair.
So, I dyed it for years. Then I reached an age where I believed that my face would
look natural with grey hair. So, I let it grow out naturally.

Not a Coincidence

It was not a coincidence that I started booking better jobs
and ones that were perfect for my look.

Really great film to work on “Fishbowl.”

Figuring Out Your Look

It is essential that you clearly understand your look.
That means, how others view you. It is not a “good or
bad” look, but instead what types of roles will you
realistically be cast in.

Without that information, your photos will not
match the right auditions for you and make it
nearly impossible to get auditions that make
sense.

So, having grey hair, not having grey hair, it is all dependent
on whether it matches your face.

Let others know if you made hair color decisions by leaving a

I did not  book  a TV commercial and felt really bad about it.

I  know, I know, I always tell the students I mentor or during
my workshops that after the audition, critique it,
celebrate that you had an audition and got through it, then
let it go.

I know but!!!

Still, I spent over 5 hours in the car, paid tolls
pumped a lot of gas in my car for the initial audition. Then,
I had a call-back. This means the casting director, director,
client and those from the ad agency liked my audition and
wanted to see me again. So, for a second time, I spent a lot of time, money and
energy for the call back.

Then, I did not book the job. Not only was it a potentially
very lucrative job, but it was also a lot of fun. Very funny
things happening and would have gotten the chance to
play and improvise with other talented actors.

Always Keep This in Mind

Frustrated About Not Booking the Job

There is a huge difference between feeling bad
about a situation and feeling bad about yourself.

That is an easy trap for actors and models to fall into.
I didn’t get the booking because I was not the perfect
person for the role. They would not have called me
into the casting director’s office a second time unless
they really liked what I did.

So, if you don’t book the job, it is OK to feel bad
about not getting the booking. But, assuming you
are a nice person, you are still a nice person.
Don’t ever base your self worth on how well
you are doing in the industry.

That is a bad place to be in and will be hard to sustain that type of
emotional roller coaster.
