I have been asked by a lot of people if their expenses are paid for if they book a job that is shot out of town. That is a tricky question to answer because there are a number of factors that will determine if hotels, airfare and meals are covered for a film or TV project that is shot far from your home.
First, if this is a non-union project, then there are no specific answers. There are no rules that a producer has to follow, and it is possible you will have expenses paid for, or, you could be expected to pay them on your own. You always have to ask your agent, or if you booked the job directly, you need to talk with someone in production before you accept the project.
If this is a Union project, then there is still not necessarily one correct answer. If you audition in your hometown and the project is being shot far from you, then you can expect to have all of your expenses paid for.
However, sometimes actors are willing to travel a long distance to audition and will only be considered for the job if they can be hired as a “local hire.” That means, they will book you, but you must be considered local and you will be treated as if you live in the area of the shoot. That means you are responsible for getting yourself to the set, paying for your hotel accommodations and meals when not working.
Your agent will have discussed this with you before the audition. If not, make sure you bring this up to your agent so there are no surprises. It will be up to you to decide if it is worth your time and money to be cast as a local.
Normally people don’t think of acting and secret clearances. Actually, there are a lot of jobs, especially industrial/educational/corporate films that require actors to have some level of a clearance. Especially, if you are living on the East Coast, there are many actors who are hired to work for government agencies. It is not easy to get a clearance.
An actor can only receive a security clearance if he or she needs to have access to classified materials. Or, if they need to work on the property of buildings that requires people to have a clearance.
The agency will really want to hire that talent because it costs thousands of dollars to get the clearance. It takes quite a bit of time and there is an extensive background check. The agency will want to check your:
1. Financial situation (this is to make sure you are not in debt – which could give you more
reason to sell important information
2. Make sure your job and education history are as accurate as you say
3. Neighbors and friends might be contacted to make sure you are an honest and trustworthy
person
4. Legal history will be carefully checked to see if you have been arrested
5. Military, tax records and travel history will be carefully viewed. If you have traveled to certain
countries, you will be required to explain why you took those trips.
6. Relatives will also be checked out
This process can take up to a minimum of 6 months.
There are three levels for clearances
A. Top Secret
B. Secret
C. Confidential
Once one has been granted a clearance, it is updated regularly, and a full investigation will take place every seven years.
If you are ever asked to have some type of clearance for a job, jump at this great opportunity. I needed to get a Confidential Clearance for a project. Let me just say, it was really incredible, and it felt great to be doing something that I knew was really helping my country.
There are times when you absolutely need to stand up for yourself and fight with industry people, but it is also important to know when to just let things go and not have a battle.
I booked a modeling job a few months back. The agent told me I would receive a specific hourly fee, and if my face was seen in the shot, I would receive an additional $200 bonus. The photographer was incredible and I really hope to work with him again in the future. However, it was very hard getting a copy of the ad we shot. It took about four e-mails to the photographer before I got my tear sheet. I knew it was going to be great, and I really wanted a copy. I am always very persistent when it comes to getting “tears,” but must walk a fine line between being persistent and being a pain. You never want to cross that line.
I finally received the jpg of the ad. After seeing the tear, I could make the argument that my face was visible, but decided not to request my agent to ask for the bonus. After sending so many personal e-mails to the photographer, an immediate phone call from the agent might be perceived as me bugging him for the photo in order to get additional money. This ad was just a brochure for a small company so it was not a big deal to me.
I believe that this photographer will want to hire me again, and I will earn much more than the $200 I lost by not complaining to the agent. So, before you start battling with industry professionals, even if you think you are right, always look at the bigger picture to see if it will be a good and helpful fight.
