You finish the audition feeling good. You prepared well, stayed in the moment, and gave an honest performance. Then, as you’re about to walk out of the casting room, the casting director looks up and says something that stops you cold — in the best way. It sounds like a compliment. You walk out smiling, already believing they loved your performance. You might even believe that you will be booked.

Here’s the truth: quite often these compliments on your performance are not necessarily a good sign. After nearly 1,300 bookings, I’ve learned exactly what they mean — and what to do when you hear them.

These 3 Word Phrases — And What They Really Mean

“You were great.” “I loved it.” “That was phenomenal.”

When a casting director says something like this, they may genuinely mean it. The problem is it still doesn’t matter. In most cases, casting directors aren’t the final decision makers. That call goes to the director, producer, or network. So even sincere praise from casting can’t tell you whether you’re getting the job.

Here’s what I want you to take away: when you hear excessive praise walking out of an audition, don’t bank on it. Appreciate it, stay humble, and move on to the next one. The actors who last in this industry are the ones who stop needing that kind of validation to feel good about their work.

Your feedback filter isn’t what casting says to you on the way out. It’s whether you prepared well and gave your honest best. Everything else is noise.
